Secondary traumatic stress (STS) This is a very interesting and important piece of information for my school community. We are frequently hearing stories that involve deep levels of emotional stress and work to be the best support system we can for our students. We often do not consider and or think about the impact that this can have on the adults who are working with the students. The common symptoms listed below are not uncommon to how some of our staff has felt in the past. We need to develop a very open support system for our staff around this area. Common symptoms of STS include the following:■ Increased anxiety and concern about safety■ Intrusive, negative thoughts and images related to their students’ traumatic stories■ Fatigue and physical complaints■ Feeling numb or detached from students■ Feeling powerless or hopeless about students and the work■ Diminished concentration and difficulty with decision making■ TS, but with some differences

Poor Boundaries. We find this impacts our less seasoned staff then our veterans. Staff wants to help students and sometimes get involved a bit more deep then they can handle. Lacking a balanced sense of your role so that you take on too much. This should be called out in the beginning of the year for new staff and to have a deeper conversation involving scenarios so new staff can get an understanding of what this means.

This is a great thing to do with staff throughout the year so folks can get a clear understanding of how they are feeling. This will need to be taken seriously so we can get an accurate response and be able to make plans based on what the staff says. The school should look for trends in order to make changes to things that we can control if the folks in the building are showing a low well being score.
