She was born in Lancaster, Massachusetts. Her field of work was astronomy. Henrietta worked at the Harvard Observatory and she graduated from Radcliff college. She was one of seven children and her parents were strict Puritans. In 1902 her salary was 30 cents per hour working a human computer. She moved on through her studies and was the reason people can measure stellar distances.

Her job before her research was to measure and catalog the brightness of stars as they came on the photographic plate. Since it was the early 1900's, she couldn't, as a woman, use the telescope. Henrietta began her research in 1907 then the standards or steps where published in 1912 and 1917.
