According to Soenjono Dardjowidjojo, the reason why a human is able to talk while a non-human animal is not stems from the biological differences humans are possessed with; the structures of the lungs, the mouth, and the brain that enable humans to manipulate a distinctive sound when it is produced.

However, this does not mean that non-human animals are incapable of communication among themselves. They are, but not in the language we normally use the term. For example, bees would perform certain type of dance to give direction of where a nectar is available to other bees. Monkeys would give signal of danger or caution by moving certain parts of trees. And hens would produce certain sounds to signal new found foods to little chicks.

In a nutshell, we can say that both humans and animals are capable of communication. However, the means used are different. A human posesses a biological mechanism to produce distinctive sounds which make up meaningful units referred to as words. With this kind of mechanism, a human is capable of being creative in the use of the sounds produced. They would move the front part of the tongue high to make the sound [u] as in boot.

There are four fundamental elements when it comes to speech mechanism; (1) the lungs, (2) the vocal folds, (3) the resonators, (4) the articulators. But how a sound is produced varies language by language. For example, English speakers would use aspiration (a strong puff of air) when they produce a [t] sound. For some Indonesian speakers, when they produce a [t] sound, they would do it without using aspiration by placing the tongue tip not on the alveoral ridge but on the back part of the upper teeth, producing a [t] which is more detailed than alveoral ridge.

Group 2

1.
Analogy of Phonetics and Phonology

Phonetics can be illustrated through Taylor Swift's songs, like how we sing her songs, how the techniques of her singing work, how we should control the pitch, tone, and rhythm to sing her songs properly. For example, when you're singing "Cruel Summer", you have to really pay attention in how the note works, as the song is mainly sung by high, cheery note. While singing the song in low note is not technically impossible, it doesn't suit with the cheerful and upbeat nature of the song.

Phonology can be interpreted in how we take a look at Taylor Swift's lyrics. How she structures her lyrics, how her rhyming works. For example, in one of her songs, "August." Swift sings about losing a summer fling, "'Cause you were never mine, never mine." However, fans interpret the lyrics as having two different words. One of the most interesting interpretations is how Swift actually sings, "Never mind" instead of "Never mine." Which could give a different kind of meaning where the narrator seems to be nonchalant about the lack of clarity in her relationship. While the right lyrics "Never mine, never mine" can be interpreted as the narrator seems to be revolted with the idea that, her summer fling, was in fact never hers.
