         <description><![CDATA[<div>Initial purpose was to get rid of slums and squattle settlements so that other countries would want invest in Singapore. Rents were very cheap at time. The plan worked as it got people staying in slums to move in to HDB flats. Most of singaporeans stay in HDB flats now as it is more affordable.</div>]]></description>

Tampines North is set to become an integral part of Tampines. Once Tampines North is fully constructed, it will provide about 21,000 new homes for Singaporeans.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Residents in Tampines (including Sun Plaza Park, Tampines Eco Green and many neighbourhood parks) will now be within easy reach of various parks and waterbodies. Residents will now also experience much easier access to the nearby Bedok Reservoir Park. Park connectors running along Bedok Canal and along Sungei Tampines connect to the Eastern Coastal Loop, linking Tampines to East Coast Park and Pasir Ris Park. A number of initiatives will be implemented to ensure that most homes in Tampines will be within 400m of parks or park connectors in the coming years.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;These include:&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>• Setting aside substantial park land in Tampines North for Boulevard Park and Quarry Park that will bring greenery to the doorstep of residents</div><div>&nbsp;• A new park connector running between Tampines Avenue 10 and Tampines Avenue 9, to link up the Bedok Reservoir Park and Pasir Ris Park&nbsp;</div><div>• New neighbourhood parks at Tampines Street 86 and off Tampines Avenue 9&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>Housing Development History</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1825: Treaty of Friendship and Alliance gave the British East India Company full sovereignty over the Island forever.  European merchants proceeded to build housing, warehouses and offices on 999 –year leased land.<br><br></div><div>1907: <em>Simpson report</em> reported that the building in Chinatown were unhealthy. The report recommended the formation of a ‘Housing Commission’.</div><div><br></div><div>1932: Colonial government increased SIT’s role to include provision of houses and flats for the lower income group.<br><br></div><div>1942-1945: The Japanese Occupation occurred, which led to the fall of Singapore.<br><br></div><div>1947: The Housing Committee was set up to study the housing situation.  The Report of the Housing Committee revealed most appalling housing conditions.  SIT concentrated its main efforts in building housing and between 1947 and 1959, 20,907 units were completed.<br><br></div><div>1955: The Central Provident Fund (CPF) is created as a pension plan by the colonial government to provide social security for the working population in Singapore.<br><br></div><div>1970: The CPF Approved Housing Scheme is extended to cover JTC flats.<br><br></div><div>1971: The HDB established a secondary or resale market for its HOS flats.<br><br></div><div>1982: The government decides to consolidate the construction and management of public housing under a single authority. The JTC handed over to the HDB 13,002 owner-occupied flats and 10,678 rental flats for management.  The HUDC was absorbed by the HDB.  Between 1974 and 1982, the HUDC had built and sold 2,732 units.<br><br></div><div>1988: Rent control was phased out.<br><br></div><div>1989: HDB launched its estate upgrading programme.<br><br></div><div>1990: HDB instituted a major revamp of then existing policies and practices.  164 rules out of a total of some 300 rules on the sale, resale, rental and use of HDB properties were revised.<br><br></div><div>1994: Demand side subsidies in the form of CPF housing grants were introduced.<br><br></div><div>1995: Executive Condominium Scheme launched.<br><br></div><div>2000: HDB tightened its regulation, requiring HDB flat owners to seek approval before the purchase of each private property even if they fulfilled the minimum occupational period.</div><div><br></div><div>2008: Global Financial Crisis</div><div><br></div><div>2009: Lease Buyback Scheme introduced by the HDB.</div>]]></description>
