Child labor was one of the main reasons the gilded age really took off. Companies could pay children very little and get a lot of labor. Since they could pay children less, they were able to keep the prices the same and keep the money under the table. -child labor doc used in class

What they can't see is big companies doing under the table deals that both parties benefit from. This would usually happen higher up in the companies, so labors and managers rarely knew about it.-Doc used in class

There has been an everlasting history with men and women being paid different wages. This is because the common thread throughout the world is that in most work fields, men will always be more suited for the job than women are. This was a big thing during the gilded age because families were doing anything they could to work and save up money during this time because the economy was good.

These people did all they could to try and better the working conditions and making sure that the products being made were safe for the consumers. They did everything they could to make things safer, and they managed to do it. Muckrakers like upton st. clair helped people realize what they were eating, and it eventually made the food industry a lot safer. Unions formed in the eastern part of the country helped mine workers increase their wages, decrease daily hours, and better the working conditions. Reformers helped dry people end prohibition by destroying saloons and burning alcohol warehouses.

During the gilded age, there were some corrupt things happening under the table with big companies and the government. The same things happen today. It mostly happens within the government and its branches. If the police department wants more time with a case, they talk to the judge off the clock and he will allow them more time with a case before it is tried. This is just one of many corrupt things that happen in today's world, and unfortunately, we don't have any control over it. I think history is repeating itself when it comes to corrupt business and under the table deals.
