During the occupation of Latvia in WWII , the Nazis persecuted many Jews and other races they perceived as "threatening." So in an act of resistance, many Jewish people started to join partisan groups. These uprisings were put down a year later, and almost all Jews were put into concentration camps. After the war, almost every Jewish person in Latvia were eradicated.

Around 70,000 Jewish people in Riga were killed, which was 3/4 of the 93,000 Jews originally. Another 2,000 gypsies were also killed. The remaining Jews were put into the Riga ghetto, which would eventually be liquidated and the Jews would be sent to concentration camps.

There were three sides to the resistance, one side joined the Germans to fight off Russians, another joined the Russians to fight off Germans, and the last fought off the Russians and Germans.

Lily Mazur Margules

Some people were able to make an impact thanks to the resistance. One of these fortunate people to survive the holocaust was Lily Mazur Margules, who was able to tell her experiences. She was even able to publish a book, called "Memories, Memories..."
