I would call, leave a voicemail, and follow up with an email asking them if they would like to set up a telephone meeting or zoom meeting (camera optional) instead.

I would email the mentee again and ask if there is an alternative preferred method of communication and if so, could they share the method and contact (e.g., what’s app). If they respond, I would ask them to be responsible for setting up the next meeting. If they set it up and make it, great! If not, if there is a mentoring program, I would reach out to the coordinator about the absence.

My role as a Mentor is to be reasonably available to my mentees. Most students don’t see ghosting as rude. I had a mentee that had major health issues and was hospitalized for 2 months. I don’t expect him to have me in his notification list for health emergencies. I would just put it out there that I’m here when needed. Life happens.

This may lead to title ix related issues and may need to be reported to that coordinator to get the student help.

Once aware of abuse, I would let my mentee know that I have a duty to report the abuse in a SOBI (report used in Alamo Colleges) and there are resources to help them. Most students don’t know their institution has resources in place to support students in these students.

We have a behavioral intervention team (BIT) on our campus. I would have contacted them before this point but if not, certainly at this point. This is situation that needs expert advice.

Clarity of expecations is needed for both parties involved. You will never know until you start the process what will occur. However, as a campus leader maintaining a firm stance on boundaries is critical for the success of the mentorship interaction.

I will talk with the student about my instructor and mentor role. Set clear boundaries and expectations. I will tell the student that he/she is making me uncomfortable.

I would contact the coordinators of the mentoring program to report the mentee's behavior. I would also notify my chairperson about this, and I would submit a SOBI on my mentee.

I would file a SOBI to report this student’s stalking behavior. Let mentoring program leads know about the situation. A virtual meeting would be best to avoid being physically near the student and record the session (even with just the AI meeting notes taken) to discuss the situation and expected behavior going forward. Also possibly go over consequences for continued inappropriate behavior.
