My least favorite character of the novel is Tally Youngblood even if she is the main character. I don’t really like her because at the beginning of the book she seems a little bit superficial. It may just be because in their society it is important to be pretty, and because she is still an Ugly, all she wants is to be pretty. Also, when it was the time for her to go to the Smoke, her reasons to go didn’t seems right to me. Even if she didn’t know anyone in the Smoke and that she didn’t wanted to be an Ugly for the rest of her life, it still didn’t feel right to just denounce everyone to the Special Circumstances. The last reason of why I don’t like this character is that she lied to all of her friends, even her boyfriend, David. What I mean by that is that she never told him the truth about her link with the invasion of the Smoke. Finally, I don’t like Tally because at the beginning she was really superficial and because she lied to all the people she loved.

We finally did it! For today’s breaking news, I have the honor to announce you that we have reached the Smoke. We can thank Dr. Cable for her amazing work and for convincing an Ugly to go there as a spay in exchange of the operation. Because of her, we have captured most of the Smokies. Some of them has returned to their original city. Others as already been change in to Pretties. Also, our theme has found the first runaway. Apparently, they would have a son of heighten years old. We, sadly, didn’t find him yet. We will need all the help that we can get to find him. The next step is to find a solution to prevent the Uglies to escape from the operation.

My favorite character of the novel is David, a Smoky who has never lived outside that healthy community that still survives in the manipulating and insane society that the world became. His parents, surgeons, departed from the city in which they practiced their profession to create a better city: the Smoke. He was born there and he grew up in that beautiful city, having never lived in a city with the Uglies and Pretties. His parents knew the sad reality of the operation, as they performed it, that magically change Uglies into perfect Pretties and they told David about it.

Plus, I like him because he believes people can change and he is optimistic. We can see that as he helps Tally change her mindset: she first went to the Smoke to report it to the Special Circumstances, destroy it and breaking her friendship with Shay (and her dreams) for her own benefits (becoming pretty), but she changed and she evolved in a way that made her motivations and life goals change completely. When David told her the reality of the operation (and as soon as she arrived at the Smoke and fell in love with the place), she decided she didn’t want to betray this community and she didn’t want to become pretty anymore. She wanted to be part of that community and David helped her thinking that way.

Part 3: Two Themes (Justine Allard)

Since the beginning of the book, the author showed two main themes. Those two themes are friendship and beauty.

To begin, friendship is one of the main themes of the book because we see throughout the book the evolution of many of them. The first one that we saw was the one between Peris and Tally. Even if we know that their friendship had been going on for a long time, it ended really quickly just because of the operation. That shows that people change through time, but sometime friendship doesn’t last after these changes. A contrary example of friendship that lasted through changes would be the relationship between Tally and Shay. We can say that because their friendship last even after Shay’s operation. The other type of friendship that we saw in the book was the one between David and Tally. This one is a relationship that started with a simple friendship but who then evolved in more serious relationship.

To continue, beauty is another of the most important themes of the book. We can say that it is one of the main themes because of the fact that the author made a link between our society and the Uglies’ universe. What I want to say is that in our society, it is important to look good in public. For example: when someone goes in a public place in pyjamas, we will automatically judge the person. Also, beauty product such as makeup were made to make people look as perfect as possible. In the book, we see that Uglies want to be pretty because, for them, being perfect is the most important thing in life.

In the book, there is a lot of character that show good presence throughout the story but there is one that makes me dislike her more than others. Shay is someone who as a strong personality and trust people easily. In the book, she met Tally in a bush after Tally breaking in the party in the pretty town. After this encounter, they become friend within a week and were inseparable. Because they were so close together, Shay was as a point to trust Tally to much. Shay didn’t think that Tally could be a spy from the special circumstance to break through the Smoke, because of this trust the smoke disappeared.

Also, Shay was stubborn, and I don’t like people who are stubborn as a point to change someone. For example, Tally and Shay had to mentality different, Tally wanted to be pretty, but Shay wanted to be herself and not become pretty. Shay wanted to convince Tally to not do the operation to become pretty, when it was Tally most wanted wish. A friend shouldn’t break her best friend wish. What I am trying to say, is that if you have a friend who has a dream or a wish do not try to break it, you should be dare for her and try to make her wish come true.

It’s the first time that someone came alone from the Uglyville. What a brave girl! She came alone with her overboard and some snack: Spagbol. If you want some Spagbol ask her and she might give you some. 😉 She escaped the Uglyville before becoming a pretty, so she is one of us now so be nice to her. From some of my source, she had a long adventure to come here, she came here alone without help of anyone just of a little piece of paper where there was some secret indication for her to fallow. It was Shay the girl who as arrived not long ago that has given her the indication. Tally Youngblood is now on the care of David for further information. For further information about the arrival of Tally Youngblood ask at the main desk, they will help you.

When Tally arrived in the special circumstances, Dr.Cable was waiting for her with a strict look like if she was able to kill someone. Tally understand a bit how Dr.Cable feels but it didn’t stop her from being confidante to become pretty for the sake of the smoke.

When Dr.Cable was about to ask her to sit down on the chair, Tally said to her that she wants to become pretty and that Dr.Cable need to keep her promise. Dr.Cable surprise of what Tally just said, ask Tally that if she answer her question correctly she will give her the pleasure to become pretty. Dr.Cable ask her why she escape from the special circumstance when she was about to become pretty. Tally nervous, told her the truth because it was the only method to become pretty. Even if Dr.Cable is cruel and doesn’t have feeling, she knew that Tally was telling the truth but with her temper didn’t accept her answer. Tally didn’t know why Dr.Cable didn’t trust her but the consequences of not answer her properly was worst than what Tally had imagined…

In the book Uglies, there is a lot of conflicts but there is two that catch the attention.

First, there is the conflict of Tally choosing to become whether pretty or not. From a young age, Tally wanted to become pretty but because of Shay she can’t anymore. Shay was her friend and she disappeared to go to the smoke village, but the special circumstances appeared to know that Tally was Shay’s friend and put Tally in a circumstance that would lead to a conflict. The day of the transformation of Tally, the special circumstances brought her to there base to talk to her of the disappearance of her friend Shay. The special circumstances wanted to know where the smoke village was. If Tally didn’t cooperate, she couldn’t become pretty. Tally was in reflection between two things, first she didn’t want to break the promise she made with Shay to not reveal anything that Shay told her that considered to stay ugly forever and second it was to find Shay and locate the smoke and if she succeeds, she can become pretty. “Until you [Tally] help us [Special circumstances], to the very best of your ability, you will never be pretty.” p.106

Second, there is the conflict of Tally choosing to denounce the smoke or not to the special circumstances. After finding the smoke, Tally was in a deep thought of what to do, press the pendant or not. Before she arrives at the smoke, she already had in mind to denounce the smoke village by pressing the pendant but when she arrived at the smoke, she was well welcome she had the opportunity to discover the society which Shay was always talking about. Tally learn a lot of thing that she didn’t learn in school when she was in the Uglyville. Tally had learned how to work and something from the Rusties. With time flowing, Tally start to have feelings for someone named David and with the time she was no longer sure if she wanted to denounce the smoke village to the special circumstances. “Tally still didn’t know how long she was going to stay there. She didn’t come to a decision about whether to activate the pendant, […].”p.218

Part 4: Antagonist (Maude Potvin, Marie Bathalon)

In the book, there are three main antagonist which have and defend the same beliefs: Dr.Cables, Special circumstances and the society. They believed that to take away the injustices based on our appearance and our exterior beauty, they could create a community in which everyone is good-looking, by performing plastic surgery on the citizens to take away their imperfections. They take advantage of this situation as they transform the brain of their subjects, and they brainwash, manipulate, control and decide of their future. They change their perspective of life to make them do what they want them to do, to have the control on their citizens, and for them to think like the society (you need to be pretty or you’re nothing).

They antagonize Tally (Dr. Cables more precisely because she was in contact with Tally) and the Smoke community as they have another way of thinking than the one imposed by the society. The government have control on the city population because they brainwash them so they think as the society wants them to think. People are excited, as Tally was, to become pretty and they can’t wait for that moment when life will be happy and fun (and not be able to think by themselves even though they don’t know it). That is what the society is awaiting of people and if they know the truth about the operation, they won’t want to have it anymore and the government is going to lose the control on their people. The Smoke is a community where some people go because they don’t want the operation and they will eventually know the truth about that sad intervention, which could cause them to make a rebellion against the government in place.

We can compare this society with a dictatorship, like North Korea. In North Korea, people are controlled by the government, citizens can’t do want they want, they need to follow what their leader Kim Jong-Un says. It’s the same thing in the Pretty Town, everyone is controlled by the government. Also, the country is close to everyone, nobody can either enter or leave North Korea just like the Pretty Town, if someone enter they are punished. The citizens in North Korea can’t do anything that goes against the government, they can just watch one TV channel which is the North Korea government channel, since they are child, the citizens are brainwash to just served the kim dynasties, just like the society in the book, they are brainwash since they are child to do what the government want them to do. In short, the society of the North Korea and the society of Pretty Town are strict and are controlled by the government without the knowledge of the citizens.

In the part 3, there is some part that I didn’t liked, like when Tally lied to Dr.Cable about the pendant. If Tally had said something else that will be proved why her pendant was damaged, she could have saved a lot of Uglies. Dr.Cable would have trust her and she would have least people watching her and at that moment she could have save some smokies but because Tally said that she hidden the pendant in a roof of a building, Dr.Cable wanted to have back the pendant, and that leads for Tally to flee.

Also, in the part 3, there is some part that I liked, like when the special circumstances came to the smoke village. I like this part because if the special circumstances didn’t come, the story wouldn’t have the adventure that will make the book good, the story would have just end with Tally burning the pendant and that’s it. But, because the special circumstances found the smoke because of the damaged pendant, the story had so much adventure that was going on that I was so much into it that it catch my attention to read the sequel.

Through all the character I could have chose to compare with Tally, the protagonist of the book, I chose David. Tally and he are both still ugly as all the other smokies. David, on his part, always wanted to be ugly because he was born in the Smoke. That means that he wasn’t brainwash be the society so that all he wants was to be a Pretty. On the other hand, Tally was born in Uglyville. When she came to the Smoke it was in exchange for the operation to become pretty because it was all she wanted since she was little. Another similarity between those two characters is the fact that they both kept secret from each other throughout the book.
