The US and the Soviets weren't physically fighting each other which makes it a cold war, but they used “surrogates” to stand in for them in a physical war.

But there are still major effects from the war such as Vietnam suffering from millions of deaths. Vietnam had over 2 million civilians dead, around 1 million North Vietnamese troops and around 200,000 South Vietnamese troops. Along with that the US dropped millions of tons of bombs during the air war. Another effect was on the Americans, the Vietnam War greatly affected the US economy. It also weakened the US’s military as well.

They are still US and Soviet "fighting" each other but it's not them its another country standing in for them and fighting for them. The wars inside the cold war are still part of the cold war because it isn't US and the Soviets in battle against each other. The Vietnam war, for example, was the US or South Vietnam against the Soviet Union or North Vietnam. The Vietnam war still has many effects that you can see today.
