Post traumatic stress symptoms are a common reaction to trauma and often improve gradually over time and with support. As many as 25% of women and birthing people consider their birth as traumatic and many partners also feel this way. Some part of your experience may have left you feeling intensely afraid, helpless or out of control. You may also have previous experience of trauma, unrelated to birth, which could resurface in the perinatal period. Have a read of the resources and support below if this is something you have experienced.

Matrescence, the developmental phase of new motherhood, is like adolescence — a transition when hormones surge, bodies change, and identity and relationships shift and this phase of stepping into a new identity and role can be anxiety-provoking. Just as we cut teenagers some slack as they adjust, mothers also should be given time, support and understanding. As Dana Raphael (the founder of the term matrescence) says, ‘giving birth does not automatically make a mother out of a woman”. It’s perfectly normal to not ‘feel like a mother’ or know what you are doing straight away.

When you’re in a queer partnership, and there are no gendered expectations in domestic life, who does what around the house? Crucially who does the most? Is it really as equal as you think? Lotte and Stu talk about how they balance house jobs and parenting with their spouses, and welcome author of The Equal Parent, Paul Morgan-Bentley, whose book reveals the science behind caregiving and unpicks the reasons why so much in the straight parenting world falls to women. We discuss the patronising and reductive view of fatherhood that prevails in modern society (don’t get Stu started!) and we learn something about ‘biological’ parenting that blows our minds. This is a fascinating episode full of brilliant insights about what happens to our brains when we become parents and it challenges the idea of the maternal instinct being something only women can have.

Labour Workshop

Induction of labour (IOL) means starting your labour for you artificially. We offer this when it will benefit you or your baby to bring forward the timing of your baby’s birth compared with waiting for labour to start naturally. The aim of IOL is to have a safe vaginal birth. IOL is common – around 25-30% of women who deliver at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust have an induced labour.

This information session will explore your induction options (such as outpatient, hormonal and non-hormonal methods of induction), birth place choices, pain relief, and support.

There is no charge to attend and you can book for any of our upcoming Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust antenatal education events via this Eventbrite page.

The Perinatal Mental Health Team is a multidisciplinary mental health service for pregnant and postnatal women with severe and complex mental illness.

The team aims to prevent, detect and treat perinatal mental health problems. We work to improve the experience of pregnancy and the postpartum period for women and their families, as well as early life experiences for babies.

Women at risk of relapse in pregnancy and following delivery are assessed early in pregnancy to allow them time to consider the treatment and care options available. The Perinatal Mental Health Team works collaboratively with women, their families and other professionals to plan care during pregnancy and the early postpartum period.

The Perinatal Mental Health Teams work jointly with adult mental health services already providing care for a woman when she becomes pregnant. We work in partnership with maternity services, children and families’ social services, primary care and other Trust mental health services.

Our service consists of psychiatrists, psychologists, perinatal nurses, perinatal nursery nurses, midwives, occupational therapists and administrators. The service works with women who cannot be effectively managed in primary care.

Lambeth Perinatal Mental Health Team:
St Thomas’ Hospital
Call: 020 3228 8800

Southwark Perinatal Mental Health Team:
King’s College Hospital Call: 020 3299 3234

Lewisham Perinatal Mental Health Team:
University Hospital Lewisham Call: 020 3228 9354 or 020 3228 9358

Croydon Perinatal Mental Health Team:
Bethlem Royal Hospital
Call: 020 3228 0304

Mother and Baby Unit:
Bethlem Royal Hospital
Call: 020 3228 4265 or 020 3228 4255
Referrals: email mbunurses@slam.nhs.uk or submit through WebBeds at www.nhswebbeds.co.uk

See the website for more information on how to get referred into your local perinatal mental health service if you think this might be beneficial for you: Service Detail - South London and Maudsley

What happens when motherhood isn’t what you expected – and when you reach out for support, you are met with judgment and prejudice?
Sandra Igwe shares her journey as a young Black mother, coping with sleepless nights, anxiety and loneliness after the birth of her first daughter. Burdened by cultural expectations of the ‘good mother’ and the ‘strong Black woman’ trope, her mental health struggles became an uphill battle.
Black women are at higher risk of developing postnatal depression but are the least likely to be identified as depressed. Sharing the voices of other mothers, Sandra examines how culture, racism, stigma and a lack of trust in services prevent women getting the help they need. Breaking open the conversation on motherhood, race, and mental health, she demands that Black women are listened to, believed, and understood.

Having a baby in neonatal care is one of the hardest things a parent can face. This handbook was created to help you make sense of what you're feeling, the things that are hard to say out loud, and the things no one really prepares you for.

It covers the full emotional reality of NICU: anxiety, anger, grief, guilt, disconnection, uncertainty, and the complicated feelings that come with going home. It also holds space for the glimmers, the moments of hope, connection, and meaning that can exist even in the hardest times.

Written by Dr Frankie Harrison, Clinical Psychologist and NICU mum, and shaped by parents who have been where you are. The NICU Parent Handbook by @miraclemoonuk | Stan

The first few weeks of motherhood can be an incredibly overwhelming experience – it is not uncommon for new mothers to feel anxious, stressed and unsure of what to do. While this is a totally normal reaction, it is important to know that if these feelings are ongoing, it could be a sign of postnatal depression.

Why not try our Breathe Melodies for Mums programme and experience the joy of singing together with other women and their babies? Not only will you find yourself surrounded by a supportive group of women facing similar experiences, but you will also discover new ways of expressing yourself through music, without fear of judgement.
