I find inspiration from The Kid Laroi in two significant ways. Firstly is the lifestyle that he grew up in. Growing up in the housing commision estates in Sydney is very similar to how I grew up. I also find influence the the use of auto-tune mixed with the natural singing abilities that he has. It creates a unique sound that not many Sydney artists have.

Blink 182

When I was 6 my mum gave me a toy drumkit. I remember not long after that I heard a Blink 182 song play in the car and all I wanted to do was learn to play it. The catchy pop melodies mixed with the punk rock percussion has inspired many of my own songs now. I tend to prefer live drums in my music and Blink 182 is a massive reason as to why.

Blink 182 draws a heavy influence from the melodic flows and lighter lyrics from the Descendants. In an interview with SiriusXM, Blink 182 spoke about how all of the punk-rock they had heard before was very angry and political but Descendants “were like this punk-rock beach boys” (SiriusXM, 2016). This changed the progression of their careers from that point forward.

The Cure

In an interview with Under The Bridge, Mark Hoppus touches on how much of an influence The Cure was for him. He spoke about how Robert Smith from the cure influenced him to start playing bass and inspired the way that he writes music which had a massive impact on the music Blink 182 went on to create.

The Jesus and Mary Chain

Blink 182 was known for keeping a tight set at their live performances. Mark Hoppus from Blink 182 said in an interview with Under The Bridge that The Jesus And Mary Chain were known for walking off of stage after about 20 minutes. When Mark got asked why Blink 182 keeps such tight sets he said, “Jesus and Mary Chain played for about 20 minutes and they’re probably one of the coolest bands of all time”, showing a clear influence on their live performances.

Tupac

In an interview with Billboard, The Kid Laroi spoke on how his mum was always playing Tupac around the house growing up. He said “I used to memorize the lyrics and then rap them around the house, and then eventually I just started relating to certain lyrics”(The Kid Laroi on Billboard, 2021). He mentioned how after some time he realized he was able to do the same thing himself, and that is how The Kid Laroi started making music.

Juice WRLD

Juice WRLD played a massive part in the beginning of The Kid Laroi’s career from taking him on tour for the first time to giving him a place to live in LA. During the time that The Kid Laroi spent living with Juice WRLD he became heavily influenced by his creative process. In an interview with No Jumper, The Kid Laroi spoke about how Juice WRLD taught him to “really getting in touch with your emotions”(The Kid Laroi, No Jumper, 2020), which has led to some amazing songs such as ‘Where does your spirit go” by The Kid Laroi.

Justin Bieber

The Kid Laroi has learnt a lot from Justin Bieber, from how to refine his singing to navigating the industry but by far the most important lesson Justin Bieber has taught The Kid Laroi is how to enjoy the creative process more. In The Kid Laroi’s documentary he talks about how the moment they met, Justin Bieber told him it was a “no judgment zone, let's all just come in here and have fun”(The Kid Laroi, 2024). The Kid Laroi struggled with the pressure of making music once he was famous and this guidance inspired him to find joy in the process again.
