They also have sub acute units which are for patients who need rehabilitation center for recovery of a major sickness such, surgery, treatment for cancer, kidney disease or heart monitoring.

Specialty hospital cares for patients who have special conditions. They provide different hospitals such as burn hospitals, oncology, pediatric, psychiatric, orthopedic, rehabilitative hospitals. 

They are similar because they both help with recovery with their different patients needs and help with any special condition that each patient may have. 

They are different because the extended care facility is mostly for elderly people or people who have a birth defect and need extra help or monitoring and specialty hospitals help others in different centers of which a hospital may have for example palmetto health is a hospital that also consists of a pediatric hospital as well.
