According to the Food and Agriculture Organization
of the United Nations, the 20-30 percent difference in crop yield between male and female farmers is largely due to differential access to resources and inputs. Women compensate for this difference by working at least 15 hours per week longer than men (especially in developing countries where women typically work 2-3 times longer than men). In addition to working the fields, women also take up the role of homemaker, spending the majority of their income and time managing the household.

One in eight worldwide did not consume enough food on a regular basis to cover their minimum dietary energy requirements over the period 2010 to 2012 according to UN reports. Moreover, compared to men, women and girls are still more severely affected by poverty, hunger and disease. Needless to say, poverty is limiting. In 2012, UN Women joined with the World Food Program, Food and Agriculture Organization, the International Fund for Agriculture Development to launch a joint program to empower poor rural women through economic integration and food security initiatives.

Women constitute the majority of the agricultural labor force in small-scale and subsistence farming. On average, rural women and girls spend almost an hour each day gathering fuel and carrying water needed to prepare meals. In some communities, these activities may take up to 4 hours a day. A study in Africa found that, over the course of a year, women carried more than 80 tonnes of fuel, water and farm produce for a distance of 1 km. Men carried only 1/8 as much, an average of 10 tonnes for 1 km each year.
