Religious images from many other catholic countries are arranged onto wooden platforms being carried on the shoulders of “cargueros”. These images that are displayed, represent the different stages that are told in the Gospels of the Passion, Crucifixion and Death of Jesus Christ. Each performance in the procession is called a “paso” and these travel through the streets of Popayan in the shape of a cross, passing by all the main churches and religious buildings.

The streets of Antigua Guatemala are covered with natural, aromatic carpets of flowers, pines, clover and fruits, which the residents put together and place in front of their homes. There are all kinds and shapes. Some are very long, even up to a kilometer, with colonial, Mayan, Roman or other original designs, and are made during the 24 hours prior to the procession. If more than one procession goes down a street a new carpet is made for each procession. Preparations for the carpets begin weeks, sometimes months, ahead. Carpets are started the day before the procession so that the carpets are finished just before the carriers of the float arrive to look its best.

La Semana Santa is one holiday during the year where in most Spanish-speaking countries entire towns, businesses, schools, and government close for at least four days, Thursday through Sunday.
People that have relocated to other places often go back to their hometowns. Others, take advantage of the long break to go to the countryside or beach.
Entire communities come together for Semana Santa celebrations. In some places, procesiones religiosas (religious processions) fill the calles (streets) each day of the week from Palm Sunday to Easter; in other words, Thursday and Friday are the most important days.
Most Semana Santa traditions are hundred of years old and originated in Spain, but many now have a unique twist due to the mix of cultures in each country.
