Armstrong is trying to change the poor conditions and lack of human rights that women, especially in zones of conflict, have to endure through.

Sally Armstrong was born in Montreal who attended McGill for a Bachelor of Education degree there. She married her husband one year after graduating, shortly before becoming a mom of three children. Residing in Oakville, she became a physical education teacher. Shortly after, someone invited her to write for a lifestyle magazine, called Canadian Living. It can be said that this was an event that jump-started her life as a journalist. She wrote about exercise and family, but when she heard about poverty in Liberia from a nurse named Theresa Hicks, she asked to go there to write a story. It can be said that this Canadian nurse was a factor that changed her career. She was approved to go to this West African country and wrote about the conditions there. Armstrong found out that it was what she was meant to do. This event sparked her interest in the international wellbeing of humans and especially women. After moving to another publication called Homemaker the support of her readers continued to propel her. Despite this, she still had to fight for every story that she wanted to publish since many people did not think that her stories matched with the other material in the magazine. Armstrong wrote about the first female Canadians on the front lines in the Persian Gulf, genital mutilation of women and was the first journalist to share the stories of women under Taliban rule. She left Homemaker and went to get a Master’s degree at U of T before continuing to speak and write to large audiences through her books and articles, work in documentaries and speeches. This powerful woman was also supported by her husband, who tragically died in a car crash in the year 2000. The combination of her family support, specific events and her natural ambition to fight for human rights made her the agent of change she is today.

This agent of change's objective is to achieve a world with human rights for everyone. Sally Armstrong took many different types of action to create change for the better. She is a journalist who shares the stories of women that very few are willing to tell. Sally has been to places like Afghanistan, which the dangerous and violent Taliban had control over, which gave her the name La Talibanista. From Kenya to Guatemala to South Sudan and even the United States, she covers topics like rape, education, poverty and conflict. Featured in interviews on news networks like Global News and CBC, she has spread awareness about the deep-rooted issues that women face. She is a speaker, an author (with 5 books) and does work in documentaries. In addition to that, Armstrong provides a voice to the oppressed women of the world. All of this inspires others to create change. (Armstrong)

(Harnett)

Armstrong's results: What has changed and what has stayed the same?

Armstrong has spread awareness of wrongs done against women in places like Africa, the Middle East, and North America. Her work has impacted many people. One can see this because she has won many awards such as 4 Amnesty International Canada Media Awards and the Gold Investigative Journalism award. She is also an Officer of the Order of Canada and was once a member of the International Women’s Commission at the UN. Alongside her teaching degree and her Master’s degree at the U of T, she also received 10 honorary doctorate degrees. Since she has had so much recognition, this demonstrates that she has successfully spread awareness about the problems women face and therefore changed their lack of knowledge. In addition to this, she helped to change the conversation about human rights in foreign countries since back then, very few cared about what was happening outside their homeland. Sally also has inspired others to make even more change. Her story from a teacher to an ordinary journalist then a war journalist is extraordinary and bound to motivate. Many also say that Armstrong has changed the industry of magazines for women. Back then, most magazines targeted towards females talked about recipes or fashion, and not larger issues like war and human rights violations. Armstrong changed that and brought stories about murder and rape and war alongside turkey stuffing tutorials. Sally Armstrong has given a voice to oppressed girls and women who are struggling in conflict zones and raised attention about the dire situations they are often in. By doing so, she is not only making more people help them, but also possibly improving their mental wellness by showing them that someone cares. However, it is difficult to measure her true impacts. She has raised attention to the issues she wants to resolve, but it is hard to calculate the exact results of what exactly she has done. One cannot find statistics of women, or people in general, having better human rights and living conditions as a consequence of Armstrong's actions directly, so one simply cannot express her impacts on the issue Sally wants to fix. Still, women are often paid less and 995 sexual perpetrators walk free out of 1000. See the graph below and the infographic to the left for more information. Keep in mind that these statistics are from the United States, the conditions overseas and in the Middle East are probably much worse. However, overall, compared to when Sally started her career around 1975, things have gotten better. For example, Armstrong states that back then, she had no competition because no one else was reporting on the women during the Taliban rule, but nowadays women like Malala are very well-known. People once ignored the voices of women but slowly groups, such as the Me Too movement has been rising. Although women globally have just three-quarters of the legal right of men, it was less than half in 1970, so it there are improvements. Nonetheless, Sally Armstrong is a very accomplished and acclaimed person, an inspiring role model who has changed the global conversation about human and women's rights.
Armstrong's success: How successful is she and what should be the criteria?

One should consider Sally Armstrong to be a successful agent of change. As the previous section has touched upon, she changed women magazines, the stigma around human and women's rights locally and globally and has inspired others to continue to do so with her articles, interviews, speeches and novels. Armstrong has done a lot to make this world a better place, but that begs the question, what should be the criteria to measure her success? There is not a set way to measure the success of someone, but I believe that one should take into account the person's mission and whether others and society were affected positively in the long term. Sally Armstrong's goal is to improve the rights of people and especially women. She has not reached her goal directly, since she has not changed any laws or made any large adjustments in society. Despite this, Armstrong has raised awareness about the lack of human rights for certain groups. This can help to make a change in the future for these groups. Now, consider her impact on others. As just noted upon, Armstrong has not had a direct effect on the lives of the women and girls she is fighting for, at least not to my knowledge, but she could have an indirect one by writing about their troubles, and therefore bringing more attention to them. Sally has had more of a direct positive impact on people closer to home here in Canada. By winning many awards, one can tell that Armstrong has inspired and influenced others to a great extent. A Globe and Mail editor-in-chief called her "a pioneer of international women's stories", and a bookstore owner named Ben McNally said that "Sally's got a huge following. People love her". Sally Armstrong also has direct positive impacts on society overall. She is known as the editor who changed women's magazines, which is positive because back then, most articles in magazines for females were about cooking or exercise. No one thought that women would, or even should, be concerned about global issues, but Sally Armstrong altered this completely. All in all, the criteria used to assess success is based upon the completion of the initial goal and the impact on other people and society as a whole. Using these points of assessment, Sally Armstrong is a successful agent of change, but she has not directly impacted the major issue she wanted to change.
