Hello, my name is Hailey, during making my chess set it required me to create a plan first. So I drew down my ideas that I had and decided on the ones I created. After sculpting them I had them fired and let them cool off; the colors I went with were all matching for both sides so I made a small band of color to decipher which piece went to which side. I finished it off by creating a board, the board was red and purple but the purple had circles of white to represent a mushroom.

Brantley Bamberg
I chose to create a modern looking chess set. I kept the ordinary style of chess sets, but added a more modern look to it. One challenge I faced was making all of my pawns the same size. They were little cubes and sometimes I would smush them too much and would have to restart. With my knights I kept the same horse look but made the edges sharp looking. I choose to go with blue and green for each set. The blue had splotches in it making it look very cool. The green was a plain green. Creating these pieces was a struggle but it showed me if I put my mind to it, I can do anything.

I chose to make my chess pieces as various peoples from Medieval Europe. I chose to do this because I thought it would be an interesting way to show the hierarchical order in chess sets. I started by forming simple shapes to look like people, then added details to represent the various roles. The detailing was the most difficult part to me because I had to make them small, but still able to be recognized as what they are supposed to be. Then I glazed them opposite colors to keep the motif of a proper chess set.

Teal is a calming color with a little bit of surprise. Making the plates was an experience. The only tough thing was making 4 in a week. The process was exciting and gave me a chance to show what I can express. No matter how many number 1 rules I still fought through the tough times

Before starting my pieces, i knew i wanted to make something simple. While creating my pieces, chose to make different cylinder and square like shapes. I used some tools to carve different indentions into the sides of the pieces. I wanted to make indentions in the pieces so i could make sure you could tell the difference between the pieces. When constructing the pieces, i had to make sure to make a height difference. Making a height difference within multiple pieces was not as easy as i thought it would be. While glazing, i felt that was the last thing that made my pieces really come together.

what did I chose to create? I created a chess set based on a cottage-core themed set, I drew it all out at first, laying out my design. Once I had it finalized, I used clay to form my shapes for my pieces, crafting them with my hands. After finally sculpting them, I had them fired in the kiln and once that was completed, I began glazing them.

I would say my biggest challenge was the fact I kept switching up my ideas after sculpting out because certain pieces wouldn't have made it and painting the smaller pieces was a big struggle. Successes would be that none of my pieces exploded.

hello,my name is jenifer Lopez the project I did is a chess set, I did it because it was a job that the teacher gave us, at first it was difficult because I did not know how to make the pieces with clay because I did not even know how to start with my pieces, but with the passing of time I handled the clay better, you have to have patience and time to make the pieces and be careful not to break them when they are drying, it was also fun to make the pieces and then paint them with clay glaze .It was difficult at the beginning but at the end I succeeded and my set of Chess turned out very well, what I can say is that you have to dedicate time and effort to your projects of this type, they will be successful

I went with a minimal look to my chess set with pastel color choices as well. I did my best to show difference in class without the design changes being too drastic. The general look should be the same. Hight and size show the levels of ability and power. The chess board itself is where I added dark colors so there was more contrast.

With my experience making my chess pieces was very short lived because covid-19 got a hold of my immune system. The original plan was to make a dinosaur chess set with 6-7 different dinosaur types, but I only got around to my brontosaurus’s. They were glazed as light blue with purple spots. I wish I had more time with them because I was excited about creating my dinosaurs for this project. Maybe I’d pick up a project like this again later, but for now I wouldn’t. -Ellie Morales

I choose to make a Christmas chess set. I was thinking about what I wanted to make and so I love Christmas so I choose a Christmas themed set. I had to think about the shapes I wanted to bring into my set. The first one was the snow man which was my favorite. A cute little white snow man with a top hat and then I went onto the Christmas tree which was simple and cute. Next was the candy canes the red and white simply adorable. Then I went on to the ornaments colorful and fun And the white snow balls. The hardest part was choosing a shape to make 16 of and I chose to make Christmas presents it was hard but worth it they were very cute. This chess set was fun but it also took a lot of time and focus. It was a good project for my first time working with clay. -Gabriella Weiss

Our first project was chess pieces. I wanted my pieces to represent life. The us becoming who we are is the process of making the clay. The colors represent that moments in our life and different sizes and shapes shows that were not all the same. So I made modern/ complex pieces. This was my first time ever using clay so of course I struggled. One piece came to big or it was slouched. We’re all different: big, small , wide , or skinny. I wanted my chess pieces to have personally. So even though my pieces were supposed to be identical I think that the fact that some of them came out off adds value. The colors I chose were purple and yellow. I wanted the colors to represent darkness and light. That life has its dark and rough moments but the lighter things in life bring pleasure and happiness. I wanted my pieces to represent that we’re all not built the exact same and we may struggle with life from time to time. But in the end we turn in to something beautiful. - Brandon sims

I chose to create my chess pieces creatures replicating that of squishmallows. I chose this as it was a much faster process for me to make and then shape since they were all of a spherical shape.
Then, I slipped and scored to attach the spheres and then added the details. To make the king and queens i chose to have them at a higher stand and i carved indents to imitate pillars. The colors i chose were one side cool colors the other side bright colors. These were to represent to the viewer that the underdog can win .

Bunny Rattle - Amelia G.

I made a rattle in the shape of a bunny because it seemed like a cute concept for the item assigned. To construct the piece, I first made a thin piece of clay and molded it in the shape of a coconut shell and then let it dry. I made a few pea-sized balls of clay to put inside the rattle, and set them aside. While those dried, I made the bottom by rolling out a thin piece of clay and blended it into the coconut shell-shaped piece. I then made a pair of triangle-shaped bunny ears and blended them onto the coconut shape. To make the face of the bunny, I used a precise, pencil-like carving tool to etch it in. To make the nose and cheeks stand out, I added some clay to those areas and blended them into the coconut shape. I made a spherical bunny tail for the little guy, and etched some hairs into it with the pencil-like carving tool.

I feel that I was successful in adding features like the nose and chubby cheeks, along with the ears. I could've done better making the body in a faster fashion. Overall, I'm pretty proud of the little guy. A few struggles here and there making the bunny's body, but it's pleasing to see in the end. Took me 4 hours at least.
