The Multicultural Inclusion Festival of Perth 2016 is the first festival of its kind that aims to actively promote empathy, respect and recognition between people of different cultures. The people living in Perth come from over 100 different nations worldwide and, as awesome as that is, there are times where we unintentionally trip each other up over cultural misunderstandings. The Multicultural Inclusion Festival of Perth 2016 will host a variety of events that serve to provide Perth with a basic understanding of the diverse range of backgrounds that we all come from: from film festivals, to merchandise, graphic design exhibitions, to kickass foreign language classes!

Event: Graphic Design Exhibition

My contribution to this event is to create and coordinate a FREE exhibition which will be held throughout the festival. This exhibition will showcase a variety of graphic artwork from the various countries celebrated throughout the festival. Its aim is to embrace the talents, influences, and variety each country offers to the art world and, most importantly, educate its audience on why multiculturalism can offer a positive and creative element to our communities and country. Each couple of days a different country will be showcased.

Exhibitions will be accompanied with music relative to the country on show to further demonstrate the positive creativity individual to each country.

Research: Examples of Graphic Design work

Multicultural Film

My contribution to this event is to create a feature length documentary about the different cultures in Perth - mainly focusing on the countries involved in the Multicultural Inclusion Festival. It will be a long film, anywhere from three to five hours. It will be filmed in Perth and will be quite visual based with a non-narrative structure dealing with themes of the human condition and aspects of these different cultures. It will be very similar in style to the Ron Frickle film Samsara. There will be three showings per week at noon on the Northbridge Super Screen and the Perth Cultural Centre Super Screen as well as several small theatres including Rooftop Movies and Luna Leederville.

Event: The Teleportation Project

What: Weekly Interior Design Workshops every Saturday throughout the festival with the aim of renovating empty shipping containers into an operational POP-UP restaurant inspired by a different country each week.

Each week, the POP-UP restaurant will be run by a restaurant specialising in the cuisine suited to the chosen country.

When: Saturdays - Interior Design Workshop

(1pm til 7pm, but hang around for a dinner on us)

Sunday to Wednesday - POP-UP restaurant!

(From 11am til midnight)

Venue: The public square outside Forrestc hase in the

CBD, next to the Green Cactus

Cost: The Interior Design Workshops are FREE!

(Only 20 places each week, Booking Only)

Why: To give the Perth public a slight glimpse of the

lifestyle that people of other nationalities lead

in terms of cultural differences in housing design

and food, and allowing ourselves to physically

immerse ourselves in what living in a home in a

particular country would feel like.

These performances will include music, dramatic pieces and dance, and will be held in venues all around Perth throughout the 10 week festival.

A fun and interactive class held in the open public, the aim is to teach the basic courtesies and languages of each country to help break down some barriers within our multicultural community here in Perth. This will be a free event for family and friends held at the Northbridge Piazza. The Piazza can be hired out for this such event. Its capacity of 55-85 people and its open and inviting atmosphere is perfect for the event.

It tells a story of the history of Rugby played between Australia and South Africa and the ups and downs of an unlikely friendship developed between some players in an environment with so much rivalry. Merchants of the Seven Seas Merchandise

Various sets of merchandise will be sold throughout the event. There will be general ones for the event itself, such as T-shirts, bags, lunchboxes, caps, key rings, glasses, and the like with the event logo (Multicultural Inclusion Collective. This will be available throughout the duration of the entire festival. Other merchandise that will be sold will be specific to that country. For example, during Japan's week, Japanese merchandise will be sold. This would include both Japanese specific items (origami) and general items (T-shirts) At the event itself the merchandise available for each specific event will only be available during that week and then the final week. If someone wishes to purchase merchandise from another week they may do so online from the website. The final week of the festival will have all the stalls from previous weeks at once for the conclusion.

I may also gather a few people to help design and then create a logo for Multicultural Inclusion Collective (MIC). The main theme in mind was one of a world map with splatter paint around.

Multicultural Film - Production Details

Directed by: Ten amateur student filmmakers from each culture celebrated will document their cultures in an observational style. Another team of experienced filmmakers however, will aid them to help bring cohesion to the project. Separately, they will explore everything from family, cuisine and religion and spirituality. The final product will this be similar to a series of short films edited together to become one cohesive motion picture. Another director will handle time lapse shots and scenic shots of Perth City. It will be filmed over the course of a year, with each filmmaker shooting for a month.

Editing: The editing will intercut between the different cultures and explore the differences and similarities we share as humans and thus promote the beauty of diversity and multiculturalism.

Equipment: Three Panavision 70mm cameras will be given to each filmmaker and the team and will cost roughly $1000 per day per camera to hire.

Sound: The soundtrack will be provided by the Perth Symphony Orchestra.

Since we have an unlimited budget the speakers would speak over a wireless microphone that’s connected to two speakers that two other people carry at the front and back of the line so the public can hear the stories properly.

Since we are celebrating one culture every week of the festival, the walking tours will tell stories from that particular culture of the week: eg. Japanese stories for the Japanese week.

I have chosen one story for each culture to show here on the right to give an example of the type of stories that will be told. I chose these stories because they offer a glimpse into the values and beliefs of these ten different cultures.

By listening to these stories, our aim is for people to better understand these different cultures that live in Perth; a way of promoting inclusion, understanding and harmony.

How long will it take?

I used a calculator website to calculate roughly how long it would take the speaker to tell each of these stories and since they would take an average of four minutes—which is too short for a walking tour—the speaker would tell about ten short stories and fables on each tour. This would take about 40 to 50 minutes.

The tours will be totally free and people can come and join and leave whenever they like.

The tours will start at 10am every day of the festival. Then there will be three other sessions throughout the day: 12pm, 2pm and 4pm.

This gives the speakers and other workers time to relax between sessions and let the public and shops not be bombarded with the stories all day long.
