Learner agency is supported by the making available a range of digital platforms that allow the learner to express their knowledge and interests

Design process - This model of thinking and undertaking projects work places an emphasis on the purpose of the outcome being developed. It does so by requiring the student to consider the needs of the recipient. It also challenges the student to continually revisit the issue in an iterative manner.

We have discussed a range of digital tools to support learner agency such a Canva to present information. There were heaps more but today we focussed upon Minecraft.

Minecraft - Joy has recently looked in the use of Minecraft for the teaching of mathematics Maori culture Geography. REL has put Minecraft to use in the designing of cathedrals in the pasts. However, the funding for license is attached to the use of MS 365. Ruben has established that there is a way on which the licences can be gained providing a specific process is followed. Testing of this idea is already underway. microsoft.com/en-nz/education/products/office.
We also discussed Audacity as a free audio manipulation tool to support music students as there seems to be a limited range of options.

Today we reflected on our recent successes and learning opportunities regarding the introduction of explicit self management skills at Yr 9 in particular. There is a general feeling in the group that we are more naturally using the terminology as part of our every day teaching. The Year 9 students seem to be taking the concept on board and responding to it in their practice. There is an easy correlation between developing self management skills and becoming more agentic learners.

We are going to focus on the explicit teaching around the character strengths focusing on a specific strength within lessons - this will promote students to think about their strengths and incorporate them into their actions in their daily lives.

We are focusing on how Garin students can articulate their learning through clarity of learning. We are exploring the design of a tool where they assess formativley at certain times in the learning and are able to look at their gaps/ next steps in learning. This follows the Assessment Literacy element of Learner Agency - being able to self and peer assess.
