To improve learning, I would suggest rehearsal as the most valuable tool, whether that is repeating it to yourself, quizzing yourself, or writing out your notes over and over. For example, Karpicke and Roediger, 2010, found a significant difference in the proportion of ideas recalled when studying once compared to repeated retrieval, with evidence of a 400% improvement with rehearsal.

Rehearsal is a vital component to improve learning and ensures information is stored in the Long Term Memory Store. When rehearsing, it is important to use a variety of different methods to review information. This way, information is encoded in numerous ways (eg. acoustically and semantically) which in turn reinforces retrieval cues and improves recall.

I'd say to go over notes more than once as rehearsal is really important and to do this in different ways i.e. flashcards with question and answer or trying to write notes from memory.

I would suggest that they should practice rehearsal. For example, going over their notes over a long period of time so that it stays in their long term memory. They can also practice retrieving information, seeing whether or not they can recall the information that they just learnt.

Rehearsing content and consolidating knowledge with retrieval exercises is good way to improve one's learning techniques. In a study, students were made to learn a list of words in a foreign language and its translation. The students yielded results that proved that students recalled information better when the list was repeated several times compared to once (Karpicke and Roediger, 2010).

I would recommend taking the time to study in depth initially, and then after a couple of hours or days to go back and quiz themselves on the information. In a study by Karpicke and Roediger, it was found that participants recalled information better with repeated retrieval than when they only read over things once. Effective techniques would be to quiz themselves and use past papers, writing out notes repeatedly.

The best method to improve learning and memorisation is repeated rehearsal. A method like Cornell notes is a brilliant technique where not only are you rehearsing key concepts, vocabulary and ideas but you are also forced to summarise that knowledge which activates the retrieval process as well. We can encourage rehearsal and retrieval in a number of other ways including flashcards, mindmaps, practice questions and quizzes.

I would advise a friend to write notes by hand as this allows you to process the info at a deeper level, it also means that you write info in your own words which makes it easier for you to understand what you have written when you read it back. I would also advise using rehearsal methods such as self testing/quiz or getting someone else to test you when trying to learn your info because repeated retrieval of info will enhance your LTM of that piece of info.

- Karpicke’s study suggested that rehearsal of information will improve learning. This is because the recall of information helps people to identify cues which is useful when people are trying to remember/ retrieve information. For example, students could rehearse information by testing themselves by doing quizzes and going over notes that were made previously.

When we first learn we should take notes and go over the material after the lecture to get a deeper understanding. We have also learnt that rehearsal is important for information to be stored in our long term memory through the models. It would be good if you could test your classmates to see whether you have understood the material well and reconsolidate. So that all information can be stored well in the Long Term Memory.
