In my school, unfortunately, there's not external support, for instance a psychologist and my headmaster is not so inclined to talk about an issue like this. It depends on the some teachers's goodwill. It's not the same in other schools in Italy, I don't want to appear pessimistic, but Nora Brezger has stressed the importance of these means. I'm a bit concerned about this, especially for the future

We sometimes call the cultural mediator that can help us, or just call the worker in the association that take care of the boys so that we can better know them and their specific need and be helped by the professionality of psichologists. we try to create a safe environment in the class so that they can feel safe because some of them had violent experiences so we want to be sure they feel confident with us and their classmates.

I agree with the teacher when she says we don't force to speak about the past experience and to propose students beautiful things. I have an African student and after a year she decided freely to tell me her story and now frequently she finds me to ask me for some advices even if about banal things (for ex a dress or her hair or a boy she likes..). She is 18 years old and she is adopted even if her parents are still living in her home country.

Having a psychologist available to newly arrived migrant children is very important. We are very lucky as we have a school psychologist on the pay role. Language mediation is also useful although the Italian students find ways of communicating and tend to be very welcoming. He wanted to speak just with his Moroccan mate in the classroom! I and my colleagues felt powerless but with the help of a Cultural Mediator who supported him we managed to interact with him. As concerns my English lessons I tried to involve him in many topics about different cultures in order to make him feel more comfortable. I realise he was afraid of his mates' judgement because he didn’t speak well Italian. But slowly thanks also to the positive attitude of the class, teachers' encouragement, the various, appealing activities in the classroom and some workshops after the school hours, he changed and he began speaking with his class and showing interest in the learning activities.

Here in Italy there is a psychological help in every school. A doctor visits the school twice or three times a week. We request help. He/her sees the student and his/her family if possible and starts a therapy if needed. We meet the doctor routinely and talk with him about strategies and behavioral concerns. We can trust in this well organized structure. There is a lot of variously emotional wounded kids these days. Italian kids, too. So: we're well trained in these matters. Thanks Erika for the tips. And yes, I think your observations are true and actual in every teaching situation. NAM migrants/refugees or not. A teacher has to put his/her students at ease. We must understand students' needs and serve them. There is and ancient Roman saying, a gladius has two sharpened sides.

Though I’ve never had refugees in my classes / school and have never dealt with these situations, I’m pretty sure my schoolboard would step in to solve whatever might happen. The schoolboard has always paid closed attention to immigrant children / sts allocating resources to support the sts’ needs so that they can flourish and be successful academically; we also have a psychologist at school who is used to deal with complex situations in a very professional way. That’s why I am absolutely sure they would be as supportive as they can and this team would be a safe and sound starting point in case we welcome refugees at our school.

These students have needs that I as a teacher I can’t provide, despite the fact that I do as much as I can. Furthermore it is not easy for these people to obtain support from state structures. Some of them are unwilling to do so (especially to obtain psychological support), because this is out of their culture. Therefore, a teacher has to be a little bit of psychologist, a little bit of social worker etc.

This school term I have a newly arrived migrant 6-year-old pupil. This pupil gets additional lessons in school in host language (Greek) but additional lessons of the host language outside school are not provided in the region (in a distance of 30 km).

During the years 1998-2000 I had newly arrived migrant pupils as well. Some of them attended additional lessons of the host language (Greek), but not all, as the school was in the center of Athens, and there is such a possibility. On the other hand I had pupils whose families were dysfunctional and who were in trouble. I tried to help them but it was impossible on accounts of the local (Greek ) legislation (the social welfare structures have no right to interfere if the interested person does not want to except of abuse, and in that case there was no abuse).

In Greece the majority of the schools, not to mention all schools, lack the peresence of a psychologist who is absolutely necessary not only for refugee children but for all the children. Of course, there are some schools which have develop some networks with organizations dealing with issues of drugs, alcohol, stress, traumatic expereinces, that hold seminars and workshops inside and outside of the classroom. I haven't experienced the difficulties of the newly arrived migrant students yet, but I would feel more confident if I knew that there would be a network of specialists that could give me advice on dealing wiht them.

There are no refugees or migrants in my school so it is very hard to imagine how these students can be psycologically stressed. Maybe they can have strong reactions, they can be scared, shy or even violent and we are not able to think why they behave this way. These videos make us realized that they need first of all a safe place, a comfortable place where they can feel safe and secure. It is very interesting the advice of Erika to create a comfortable space and to help them with breating exercises and music.

It is also very important not to ask them to tell their stories because the storytelling can increase their emotional problems

In these situations I have always worked in a team with other teachers of the school. Educators or anyone involved in them, only it makes an initial presentation, but there is no one path that leads us to a common purpose, which is the child who has needs. each works independently but thanks to the work of the whole teaching team we can do the best for our pupils without doing some differences. With some we use a teaching strategy, with others we feel differently, but we do our best for the good of all. With someone we use music, art, sports, dexterity ...

As Erika said, all of them would greaty benefit from attending a course on trauma pedagogy, however, such courses cost money, and neither individuals nor schools often have money for them. Sometimes, in schools there are psychologists or other expert staff who might be able to help, but also a lot of schools don't have any. Outside help can be organized, but teachers aren't sure on who to turn to for assistance.

Edi, ItalyTo restore the confidence in migrant students is an important issue and one of the first priorities. One way to make them feel safe and accepted is to create a friendly environment, where they can express themselves freely, whenever they want and without forcing them. Relationships outside the family are also important and it is fundamental to create opportunities for them to socialize, both at school and outside.

In the first grade there is a kid who was too aggressive both at school and in the shelter, as they informed us. The class teacher explained to the rest of the class that it could be because of his experiences or because of his language difficulty. Students tried to play with him, and communicate using body language, they did not 'answer' back to his attacks. Slowly, he started participating and now that he has learnt a few words in Greek, so that he is more confident, he has calmed down. I am not aware if he has received any specialised help at the shelter

As I mainly work with Asylum Seekers, I often happen to see students who cannot concentrate in class or even attend classes because of the trauma caused by their life experiences. In some cases the trauma would become a major issue and would be classified as a mental health matter. The project which I work for has a support network that includes links to various health teams, so we are able to refer our learners to specialists who would be able to arrange for an appropriate care. On our side, we try to make sure that all learners feel safe and welcome to join our lessons and other activities even if they do not fell prepared to stay till the end of the event. We appreciate their personal situations and try not to put too much pressure on our students. Our students come to the project to get support - not to go out of their ways to meet our expectations. That's the main message for the learners and for everyone working with them.

At my school if students have problems because it’s difficult for them to integrate and the change has resulted in a sort of trauma for them there is a counsellor who has been working with migrant students for years who supports them. We also ask for help to the religion teachers. They know each student’s story and also their family problems because they work in strict connection with the local parishes and are always willing to collaborate.

In Greece most institutions that offer such help are understaffed. The second most important is teachers' attitudes.
