Bananatex is a natural biodegradable canvas fabric made from Abaca Banana plant fibres (aka Manilla Hemp). These plants grow native in the Phillipines. It is vegan and plastic free making it a good alternative to polyester. It is made up of Cellulose which is the main component but some additives are Hemicellulose, lignin, pectin, ash, and extractives.

Abaca banana plants are grown in the Philippines in a natural ecosystem without chemical treatments. These plants are part of a sustainable forest project in Cataduenes that supports local farmers and reforestation. When the plant decomposes naturally, it creates a natural fertilizer. Fibers are extracted and boiled then pressed into sheets. Then, they go through a paper making and yarn spinning process in Taiwan. When dying, they use a traditional yarn dying method. It ends up being a very strong and durable while keeping its promise of sustainability.
