As noted above, students frequently learn through discovery in PBL, therefore have a greater overall understanding of the subject matter due to being able to relate it to experiential learning.

Teachers often need to have a fluid lesson plan in PBL, since the project itself can change based on a group of student's overall understanding or lack of understanding of a subject.

As noted students don't often come away from PBL with "Facts", but are more likely to remember the fun experiences. I think it's helpful when students have a firm foundation in facts already... then apply them when working with a project. When working with students on a summer water monitoring project, students got a firm foundation in classes in the lab on procedures - then learned to apply them when looking at actual macro-invertibrate in the field - splashing around in the stream which was the "fun" part. Finally students brought data back to the classroom for analysis and review. This is when we spent time graphing and having discussions on the knowledge we gained on the overall health of the streams and environment.
