Yaks are relatives of cattles and could be found in central Asia, mostly in region of the Himalayas. Unlike cattles which thrive in lower altitudes, yaks thrive in higher altitudes.

There are both wild and domesticated yaks. They are mostly domesticated for their milk, and labour. They are observant and suspicious of strangers, making the herds easy to keep.

Yaks are also valuable assets. A groom would normally give at least 2 yaks to the bride's family while asking for her hand in Marriage.

They have firm dense horn to help them break through the snow for plants buried underneath. Their horns are also used as a defence against predators such as the Tibetan wolves. They belong to the same cow family as buffaloes and bison. Like cows, they also have more than one stomach. They are herbivorous, and their diet consists of grass herbs and flowers. In parts of Tibet, they are also used for sports such as yaks racing as part of their culture.
