Nelson Mandela was born on July 18th, 1918 in the village of Umtata in Transkei, South Africa. His father fell off from the power of the chief position and he then got poor and lost all of his dominance. Mandela grew up poor. When his father died he was raised by someone who his father trained to become a leader, Jongintaba. Mandela then took off in his educational career going to schools like Clarkebury, Healdton, and Fort Hare, all elite African schools. The society at the time was very male dominated and racist, very colonial at the time. In his 20s, Mandela became involved in the anti-apartheid movement, Mandela also joined the African National Congress in 1942. For 20 years Mandela led peaceful non violent protests against the apartheid.

Apartheid started in 1948. Essentially, it was a racial segregation act that took place in South Africa after an all white government came into place. Every race would be split up, away from all of the white people. They were all treated horribly. The apartheid was not ended until 1991, when a new president came into power. The South African National Congress (ANC) were the ones who opposed apartheid and fought for freedom.

The opposition to apartheid started fairly early. It started with peaceful protests and strike while it eventually lead to armed conflicts. In 1960, police shot many people who were affiliated with the ANC and the Pan-African Congress (branch of the ANC). This event would cause even more tension between the nation. The imprisonment of many apartheid leaders, including Mandela, would call for the attention of many other nations opposing apartheid.

Mandela played a HUGE roll in the apartheid oppositoin. Mandela became known as an inspirational figure to many, while still remaining peaceful and kind. When the apartheid began to seperate South Africa into groups based on race, Mandela immediatly recognized this as an injustice. He became a leading member of the opposition against the apartheid a big inspiration of his was Mahatma Gandhi and his peaceful, yet effective strategies. Because of his opposition of such a strong government he was arrested and remained in jail for 27 years until the apartheid ended and he was set free in 1990

Mandela and 150 others were arrested for treason for their political advocacy in 1956. in 1961, Mandela believed the only way to end the apartheid was armed violence. Nelson then spent 27 years in prison because of this armed sabotage against the government. Banished to Robben Island, Mandela began to fit into jail life and read plenty books like shakespeare. Mandela also went to different prisons like Pollsmoor and Victor Verster prisons. The Prison life was harsh and changed Mandela. However, Mandela's smarts and leadership led him to bend the officials at even the most cruelest of prisons. Serving 18 of his 27 years, Mandela was released from Victor Verster prison on February 11, 1990. It was then when Mandela then started his fight against the Apartheid and really began his revolutionary movement.

Nelson Mandela anticipated that South Africa's system of apartheid would not live to see the future. When Mandela was offered freedom in exchange for rejecting the opposing side to the actual government. In the end, Mandela's vision was right, the outside world has retaliated against South Africa. During this process, business owners around the area and young whites were aiming for a more healthy and home environment.
