Longstreet's first real war experience was the Mexican War.

Recognned for his bravery, Longstreet served along his long time friend George Pickett.

During the Civil War,Longstreet and stonewall Jackson were promoted to a division of six brigades which was then nuclueus of what would eventually become the first corps of the Army of Northern Virginia.

From the letters he wrote to the New Orleans Times, his support of the Republican Party and his memoirs divided him from the Southerners.

His three children died in January 0f 1862 due to a rapid succession from Scarlet fever.

James Longstreet (1821-1904) was burrried at the Alta Vista Cemetery In Gainesville, Georgia. His burial site still can be visited today.
