Our work will interrogate the relationship between our bodies, the perception of illness, and representations of these relationships. From the start, we wanted to give ourselves a scale: the scale of the body and we relied on key words: oppression / breathing, body constraint / deployment.

To do this, today we made attempts to constrain the body. To constrain the body to signify an oppression of the illness, this desire to fight, to breathe.
We had the idea of trying to oppress the body by constraining it with its movements or by constraining breathing with bubble wrap and rope or by trying to compress the rib cage or even bound feet and hands. The intention would be to make video or photos to illustrate our project. The approach we took today was to see how we could illustrate the oppression and then with a second action break this oppression by the force of the breath and the breath releases.

What didn’t work today. The materials are not suitable for making the inhalation and exhalation visible, the movements of the stomach and lungs are not wide enough. Therefore, we want to try to illustrate this oppression of the body by suffocation. you breathe with your mouth and nose. Coming to constrain your body parts seems a more interesting track to us.

This work speaks to opposition. The contrast between the liberty and equality that characterises supposed French Republican Identity and the violence that characterises the lives of certain identities in France. The above values promise an acceptance of all, as “there is one universal french identity.” However, universality requires a homogenising force, that is necessarily repressive. Laws such as that against the headscarf or historical colonial policies such as the ‘mission assimilatrice’ are examples in which certain bodies, vessels of identity are controlled by the state. The frame controls, makes identity uniform through the pale coloured tights. The projection of the constitution and identity numbers is distorted through the physical struggle against the frame. Répression instead of promised liberty is carried by our bodies.

After meeting as a group and working around our initial individual ideas (linked to consumption, space and control) we dove deeper into the work of Pedro Almodovar specifically "La piel que habito". We were inspired by the themes of
bodily transformation and their link to spiritual transformation. The 'neutral' colour palette and actual use of a body suit is something we wanted to work with. Discussing skin its supposed manipulation and fallacy of neutrality. After the group discussion we were focused on the notion of belonging and physical sense of belonging- in relation to contrasts: feeling too big or too small, having and holding autonomy in a space or not. These sensations led us to thinking about means of 'correcting' them through assimilation. Our finals thoughts were on forced assimilation/ intégration state control over body.

“The Weight On Our Shoulders” is a social commentary about the pressure put on female bodies to appear perfectly balanced and straight. A series of photographs presents the difference between a woman's natural posture and a woman’s “ideal” posture with prosthetics made to help the body stand straight. A prosthesis refers to an extension of a body by artificial means. Anything can be an extension, a prosthetic, an unnatural feature, which shakes societal boundaries. Human body with prosthetics signifies a rejection of rigid boundaries, notably those separating "human" from "machine." Yet social norms often cage the possibilities for the female body to transcend already set boundaries. After all, is not sitting straight a deficiency that needs to be supplemented, or is it a cage? Do prosthetics help supplement a deficiency or do they further alienate women from their own bodies?

We researched artists who have worked with tights in their work. Marianna Bernhaut and Martin Soto use of objects inspired some of the experimentation to the left. . We first tried using ‘found objects’ (as of the Dada movements). The rock was symbolic in terms of the weight a body carries, or the weight of resistance against control. The painting and smashing of the vases had relevance to our theme of forced assimilation however, after the group discussion we agreed to work a lot more on the semiotics and symbolism of all aspects of the work.

Our bodies make another universe. Combining Emanuele Coccia’s idea and the Modulor by Le Corbusier, the organic (body) and the inorganic (building) are integrated: bodies are tools for measure, the internal movement of the organic body simulates the operation of an inorganic urban. Heads and faces were cut out to show the loss of identity. After talking about how urbanization change the chinese landscape, we started our experiments based on the personal photos of Yiming Yao, a student of Sciences Po, currently in China. With the urban landscape as a reference, intersecting bodies of different skin color delivers the sense of alterity, of both the foreign and the organic.

A standardised human figure used to design the structure and size of housing units. He believed that it should allow maximum comfort in the relationship between man and his living space. Thus, Le Corbusier thought of creating a system more suitable than the metric system, as it is directly linked to human morphology, and he hoped one day to see the latter replaced.

http://www.veroniquechemla.info/2015/05/le-siecle-de-le-corbusier-de-juliette.html

Dach and Zéphir

The French artists Dach and Zéphir inspired us to think about the object (in our case, the prosthetic) as a medium and a part of a larger whole. Their work "La figure de l'autre" tackles history and cultural heritage as capable of producing a language of forms, materials and uses, at the origin of artefacts. That is why our prosthetics found inspiration in the African head vase as an object serving to keep the body standing straight.

Donna Haraway, "A Cyborg Manifesto: Science, Technology, and Socialist- Feminism in the Late Twentieth Century," in Simians, Cyborgs and Women

Haraway’s manifesto inspired us to think about prosthetics as means of transcending societal boundaries. According to her work, a human body with a prosthetic (understood in a broader sense of extensions) signifies a rejection of rigid boundaries, notably those separating "human" from “animal” and “human” from "machine." That led us to reflect on the existence of boundaries, especially for women, and on the way in which objects can serve as either tools to break the chains making them unfree, or as tools to keep them in the same cage of societal boundaries, norms and gazes.

Chicago School of Media Theory, definition of prosthetic

Karl Marx's description of the connection between material things and social relations lays the foundation for twentieth century theories of prosthesis: "There is a physical relation between things. But it is different with commodities...There it is a definite social relation between men, that assumes, in their eyes, the fantastic form of a relation between things" (Marx 77). The blurred line between men and the materialism of the commodity sets up a prosthetic system in which social relations are determined by the material relations between commodities, ultimately alienating men from one another and from themselves.

Then, we chose plastic as our medium, which allowed us to question the effects on the living body and at the same time its negative impact on the natural world. By restricting our movements, causing harm to ourselves, and suffocating ourselves, we saw plastics harmful results on a living body, and at the same time on the environment as a whole. Plastic, generated in immense quantities by human beings, modifies our ecosystem, oppressing and poisoning it. If you would like to know more about our learning process throughout the week, all the information can be found on our padlet.
