The responsibilities of the creator and the responsibilities of the creation is a theme found in the book. When Victor creates the monster he is playing God. However, when the monster comes to life Victor rejects it and therefore proves how human he really is. Victor continues to reject the monster and his request to create a female companion for him throughout the book. Victor, therefore, does not uphold his responsibilities as a creator. Nor does the monster as he murder friends and family of Victor. This shapes Shelley's opinion that creators and creations have responsibilities. Victor's desire for knowledge is ultimately the cause of his family's tragedy; however, by creating the creature and running away, he set up a storyline parallel to his own. The creature sought knowledge just like Victor did in his early years. When the creature watched the family, he tried to learn everything that he could from them, and he stated, "I ardently longed to comprehend these also," when discussing language (Chapter 12). Just as Victor's learning lead to his demise, the creature followed that same path. From reading Paradise Lost, he found a connection between himself and Adam, but because he was not "from the hands of God," he "many times considered Satan as the fitter emblem of [his] condition" (Chapter15). Not long after this idea, the creature read Victor's paper that stated "hateful day when I received life," and he set out for revenge which only furthered his unhappiness and caused more tragedy.
