We recently talked about Nazism and Holocaust in occasion of the Memory Day. For my students, what happened during World War 2 is something far away in the past. So I need to make some concrete and actual examples. The right occasion came with the possible arrival of new migrants in their town. How will they act towards them? Will they be welcoming or will they exclude them from their lives? The majority of them showed a close minded behavior, saying these people are different from them and they have to live in different areas. Others said it's ok as long as they are not in the same classroom. Finally after discussing a lot, they realized they were acting in the same way Nazists did. I found this topic and this discussion very useful to prevent any sort of racism and discrimination in the classroom and in life.

We work a lot with ethical dilemmas in my psychology classes, there is a module in ethical development where the development of ethical thinking is discussed, The students' favorite is the one initially used in research in this area: an seriously ill woman's husband goes to the drug store to buy her a medication. She will die if she doesn't get it. However, the pharmacist sells that drug at a very high price, to profit from that. The man cannot afford to buy the medication and the pharmacist does not do any discount. Should the man steal the medicine from the drug store?
Depending on the student's age, different answers are expected. I'm just saying that to point out that a kid's stage of ethical development should always be considered when talking about responses to ethical dilemmas.

I had this idea on my mind many years ago. Here's how to do it:
- Students will work in groups of four.
- Choose contentious pictures from newspapers, magazines or books.
- Each group will be given one picture.
- Make up general questions that will apply to any picture, such as "What is happening?". They will then interpret the situation.
- Next, ask them if they think it is right or wrong that this fact is happening and what would be the solution.
- From then on they will be developing their ethical thinking skills.
- Finally the groups will show their picture to the class, describe the situation and provide their answers.
The more poignant the pictures the better will be the answers.

Real life dilemmas are always present in our classes. Every time a student misbehaves or doesn't follow the school rules or just simple rules regarding socialization, teachers and students face real life dilemmas. Students are asked to think about their atittude and their consequences. Everyone thinks on how to solve these problems, brings solutions to the class and discuss in groups solutions for each problem. It is not easy, and many times students do not want to think on their consequences and continue with the same behaviour. Changing minds and attitudes cooperatively is rather difficult.

Both students and adults face life dilemmas in their everyday life. One of our TV channels started showing a series of short videos about happy children. Two weeks ago we watched with my students from high school one of the episodes about a little boy who moved to the Netherlands with his family. Now, he's 6, he has never gone to a Ukrainian school and has never received any marks or grades at school. He is allowed to do whatever he wants, he is not better and not worse than his other classmates. My students divided into two sides: some of them thought that it was excellent not to estimate who was better and who was worse, theother thought it was really bad because this boy might never learn anything, might not have any ambitions and goals, might not receive any good education. Finally, we came to the conclusion that everyone had his or her own way and nobody can offer a universal style of life and learning.

I think it is always important to engage students with real life issues or tasks to help them to enforce their ability to face/solve problems. The best think is to make them participate in dilemma discussions, also called value discussions. These must not be necessarily be connected or inspired by their content learning or subject they are studying. These conversations help students to more fully understand their friends/family or community issues. It also helps them to see the world from different perspectives and expand their emotional intelligence by exercising empathy and social connections. We could start from a reading or a picture. Some important topics faced in classroom could be inspired from different fields: science, religion, economics, politics: for ex. bullying students, violence, war refugees, climate changes and environment. Even literature can help in prompting discussions.

We listen to all opinions and we agree to a definite solution. The implementation of this solution is checked next week in the subsequent meeting.

I loved the activity of Orestina, from Italy. I think the most effective way to influence the students way of thinking is by “doing”. At my brother’s school they take 14-year-old students on a trip to sahara, where they live a whole week with saharaui people, they experience from first hand the difficulties they have to access to water, to travel, to cook. When they return they approach topics like the wasting of water in a completely different way.
Also, I love the Daily Dilemma Archive, I didn't know this resource but I think I will introduce some of the suggested discussions in my classroom.

Ethical dilemmas are frequently met in class and students need guidance as they often get confused. An example I 've recently met in class : Students gathered money from a school party they had organised to finance a school field trip. The question was : Should they split this money equally to all students covering a part of the ticket or should they support only students who cannot afford any school field trip?
