Explaining thinking - utilizing previous grade skills to support them in practicing and building upon the work

Exemplars are huge to understand expectations. I enjoyed working though a problem in a way that I would answer (and expect) then having the opportunity to see how it lined up with the exemplar provided. I would like to do this with my kids so they can see where they are at currently and where they need to move to.

Based on what I learned today, the reasoning/conversations that happen naturally during lessons do have value and I should make time for them (when appropriate). I will be encouraging them more often!

As the teacher, it is important to model and explain using reasoning with students. This is good practice for them and shows how important it is not to just do the math, but talk about the math. I think highlighting great math reasoning would be a next step in 3rd grade!

I see that we need to not accept just numeric reasoning. The students need to explain using mathematical language

For my students, it's important to get them to verbally explain their thinking first. Then, show them explicitly how to put it into writing.

I am wanting to spend more time with the kids focusing on typing complete reasoning of why an answer is correct or incorrect. I also believe it is important to share with parents the importance of students explaining their reasoning with math thinking.

I will focus on math vocabulary to make sure students understand the language and vocabulary used in problems.

I need to work more on written explainations. My class is getting better at verbally explaining their thoughts but writing it out is still very painful.

It is important to support students in applying writen repsonse strategies to their math. I want to spend more time during lessons highlighting the importance and procedure for explaining mathematical thinking.

The collaborative portions of IM lend themselves to students being accountable and enriching their ability to communicate their ideas clearly. They can hear peers make great explanations and see thinking that is different than theirs. it Expands their strategies.

There should be time for students to explain their reasoning. Some type of a rubric can be made with the class that helps them see how they can score 4,3,2,1 on problems when they model and explain reasoning.

Asking "Why do you think what you think" has always been a part of our learning conversation but will more purposefully focus on that written explanation.

My team thought that after doing compare and connect that it could be followed by discussion supports. This would need to be planned out ahead of time.
