During my travels, I also visited Vietnam, where I witnessed the rapid urbanization and its impacts on local communities. These experiences fueled my passion for creating equal opportunities for all and in doing so seeing the benefits of the UN SDGs. A key one being SDG 11 sustainable cities and communities. this meant I became acutely aware of the challenges and opportunities that arise from the interaction between urban development and environmental sustainability.

Now, as I pursue my studies in geography at university, I am eager to explore these dynamics further. I believe that understanding the balance between rural and urban needs is essential for creating equitable, sustainable communities. Through my education, I hope to develop innovative solutions that harmonize these diverse environments, ensuring a healthier planet for future generations

• Achievable: Use a planner to break down assignments into manageable sections and dedicate specific weekly slots to extra reading.

• Relevant: Early submission and enhanced understanding through reading will improve academic performance and reduce stress.

• Time-Bound: Achieve this for all assignments and readings throughout the current academic term.

3. Gain Relevant Work Experience During the Summer Break

• Specific: Secure a summer internship or work experience opportunity in the environmental sector or another area relevant to human geography.

• Measurable: Apply to at least five relevant positions and attend two interviews, with the goal of securing one position by May.

• Achievable: Research opportunities through university career services, networking events, and online platforms, dedicating 3 hours per week to applications and follow-ups.

• Relevant: Gaining work experience in the environmental or human geography sectors will provide practical insights and enhance career readiness.

• Time-Bound: Begin researching and applying in March, and secure a position to commence by June.

These insights were valuable during a recent group project with limited time to create a PowerPoint presentation. I used my Team Worker skills to encourage open communication and collaboration, while my Monitor Evaluator role helped critically assess ideas and streamline decisions. As a Resource Investigator, I sourced useful materials to enhance our presentation.

The time constraints pushed us to work efficiently by dividing tasks effectively. While detail-oriented work isn’t my strong suit, I contributed to final edits to ensure the presentation was polished. Delivering the presentation also helped me practice public speaking, and our thorough preparation boosted my confidence in addressing an audience.

This experience reinforced my ability to support teamwork and adapt under pressure. Moving forward, I aim to balance my strengths with improving in detail-oriented tasks, striving to become a more versatile team member.

A key personal goal of mine is to contribute positively to society. I am drawn to the Environment Agency’s clear public service mission and its responsibility to protect people and the environment for the long term. Roles that focus on land, water, planning, and national operations appeal to me because they deliver tangible outcomes, such as reducing pollution, managing flood risk, and supporting sustainable development. Being able to see how evidence-based decisions directly improve environmental and social outcomes is something I find highly motivating.

Growing up in a rural area has given me a strong affinity with the natural environment. I have seen first-hand how changes in land use, water quality, and development can impact local communities and ecosystems. This has shaped my interest in environmental protection and sustainability, and it has driven my decision to study Geography. The Environment Agency’s work reflects the values I have developed through this upbringing, particularly the importance of safeguarding natural resources while supporting resilient communities.

I am also motivated by opportunities to broaden my perspective and experience more of the UK. The national and regional nature of the Environment Agency’s work offers exposure to a wide range of environments, challenges, and stakeholders. This aligns with my personal ambition to better understand the country as a whole and how environmental issues vary across regions.

Overall, this placement represents an opportunity to develop practical skills, deepen my understanding of society and governance, and contribute meaningfully to environmental protection—goals that closely reflect both my personal values and career aspirations.
