ADHD is often noticed in childhood by a parent, caregiver, or teacher. Through tests that are performed by a psychiatrist, psychologist, or neurologist, children and adults can be diagnosed. To be diagnosed, children must have at least six symptoms of hyperactivity, inattention, or both which last longer than six months. ADHD cannot yet be diagnosed using brain imaging.
The Predominant-Inattentive type of ADHD is most common in girls and because of this girls often do not get diagnosed until later in life.

There are behavioral therapies and medications available for ADHD, but it is not something that can ever be cured. Therapy may help by discussing symptoms and strategies to manage the symptoms or talking about how ADHD is affecting someone's life. There are two types of medications: stimulants and non-stimulants. Medications such as Adderall or Methylphenidate are stimulants work by increasing the brain's levels of dopamine and norepinephrine. Non-stimulants such as atomexotine and bupropion work by increasing levels of norepinephrine in the brain.

Me! I have Predominantly Inattentive ADHD and because that type of ADHD is so hard to diagnose, I was not diagnosed until I was 16 (most people are diagnosed during childhood or early adolescence). I had a lot of difficulty concentrating and my grades were suffering a lot. ADHD runs in my family and both of my brothers also have it so my mom decided to get me tested. The tests that I took to get my diagnosis were simple things like remembering certain words or putting things that were out of order into order (like letters or numbers) but the point was to test my attention span, my comprehension of basic skills, and if I could sit still and concentrate for a long period of time. Getting diagnosed was actually such a relief because it made me realize that my brain worked differently than others and that's why I was getting bad grades. Using different strategies to concentrate and getting help from the school like additional time on tests really helped me. There is a huge difference in my grades from before I got diagnosed and afterwards. With help from others I was able to bring my grades up and even move into upper level classes.
