5. How does your book begin? First describe the events that start your story. Then tell if this is a good, effective way for the author to start the book. Explain why or why not. What would you change? Start out: My book begins… This is a good/bad way to start the story because…

My book, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, begins with the introduction of Mr. Utterson, “Mr. Utterson the lawyer was a man of a rugged countenance, that was never lighted by a smile; cold, scanty and embarrassed in discourse; backward in sentiment; lean, long, dusty, dreary, and yet somehow lovable” (p.1). This is a great way to start off the book because we get an idea of the main character. Also this introduction shows the reader that Mr. Utterson is one of the good guys in the book and that readers can trust him. Also the narrator states, “It is the mark of a modest man to accept his friendly circle ready made from the hands of opportunity…” (p.1). This quote also shows the reader that Mr. Utterson surrounds himself with good people. This introduction helps the reader trust that Mr. Utterson only has the best intentions.

In the first chapter of the book, readers also get a good idea of who Mr. Hyde is. Mr. Hyde is introduced as the evil character at the very beginning of the book. For example, “I never saw a man I so disliked, and yet I scarce know why” (p. 5). This quote shows that Mr. Hyde is very disliked. In the first chapter, readers also become aware that Mr. Hyde ran over a child and severely injured her. This was a great way to start the book because readers already know who the characters are. The author effectively described the characters and how readers should feel about them. For example, readers know from the very first chapter that they can trust Mr. Utterson. Readers also understand that Mr. Hyde is the enemy just by the way he is described.
