To produce sounds we use the organs of speech, they help us to articulate sounds. It all starts in the lungs, they help us to inhale and exhale. In the top of the lungs there is the trachea, when the air exits from the lungs it travels through the trachea. Then we have the laryx, which is very important because it has the vocal cords. The vocal cords is flexible and very movable, they open and close when the air passes through the trachea causing a vibrating movement. It can go through the oral cavity (mouth) or nasal cavity (nostrils), in those places the air escapes into the atmosphere. The organs of speech help us modify the sound, this can help us in the communication. Some organs are, tongue, lips, teeth, alveolar ridge, hard palate, etc.

In the complex process of speech, different parts of the body get affected in different ways. They are all central in allowing us to speak. The purpose of this lesson is to focus on the flexible and movable bands of muscles tissue that we call vocal folds (vocal cords).
To recap, according to the position of the vocal cords, sounds can be classified intro voiced sounds and voiceless sounds. When the vocal folds are spread apart no vibration is produced. The same happens when we speak, whisper or speak silently. The larynx continues in the pharynx which carries the air to the mouth. The air that helps us to produce sounds passes through two cavities: the nasal cavity and the oral cavity.

Phonetics is a branch of linguistics that studies speech sounds in general. Phonetics focuses on the production and classification of sounds. It looks at the way they are produced, how they are used in spoken languages, how they travel through the ears, and how they are registered by the air. The classification of sounds is represented in the international Phonetic Alphabet or IPA for short. The IPA is a system that provides a unique symbol for each distinctive sound in a language. For example, the word cat is transcriben as /kæ/. /kæt/
