Post a quote along with the page number from this section. Tell us why you thought this quote was interesting/worthy of annotation. DO NOT REPEAT QUOTES from other classmates, OR, if you do repeat, you need to say something significantly different about it.

Example:

"We were having this conversation on a fine summer evening...You could see lots of aerials and satellite dishes, and sometimes, right over in the distance, a glistening line that was the sea" (pg 17).

This quote introduces a recurring theme of Kathy seeing some kind of boundary or "line" on the horizon. This represents how Kathy is trapped by her environment, but she doesn't even realize it -- she doesn't realize what freedom is or how to achieve it. The book will end with a kind of "line" in the distance as well.

As a kid there was an Ultra foods two blocks down from my house and l'd go there with my parents all the time. This was a good feeling of nostalgia because when I'm on my way home and I see a empty abandoned building where ultra foods used to be I think of me as a kid and how carefree I was and I would eat almost anything.

I still think sometimes nostalgia can be a bad thing because as it reminds you of memories that are happy you might miss them and you need to move on from the past to the Future and see all the great things that are going to come your way.

I think tables 4 and 2 did really good. They has a lot of evidence and good line of reasoning and it was good. Very well said and very well done.

My grandma moved to Mexico now so we don’t see each other as often anymore. I’m still close to them but we are not as close as we used to be. I feel nostalgic during the holidays because those were the funnest memories I had with them and I’m excited to make more soon. Even thought there are negative effects to it, there are also plenty of positive effects that I think outweigh the negative effects. Being nostalgic about happy thoughts in the past can bring you comfort in times of discomfort. There may be times where it brings you sadness, but that’s not always a bad thing. I also think table 4 did a good job explaining and just overall a good job on their presentation.

When feeling nostalgia for the past and look back at something it’s okay, rather than being obsessively nostalgic about something. When it comes to that point where we start comparing the past to the future is when I think it gets bad. Other than that if we are naturally being nostalgic for something that once was I dont think its a bad thing.

Maurice saying that Ruth is an attention seeker, and I agree with this because throughout the book we see more of Ruth’s behavior and how exactly Kathy portrays her from the past experiences she’s looking back on. He specifically mentioned Ruth lying about where she got her pencil case from, which is a small lie so I think that shows a lot of Ruth’s character with her feeling the need to lie for something so small.

Another thing said was that Ruth previously made fun of Kathy for liking Tommy but she then got together with Tommy. It was confusing because Kathy always remembers Ruth making fun of Tommy while Kathy was always there for him. Jocelyn mentioned that in the movie when Ruth kissed Tommy that it was strange because Ruth was one of Tommy’s main tormentors as a kid, but she is now saying that they’re made for each other.

Teachers made it seem like if you didn’t plan on going to college you can just start getting ready to give your resume to McDonald’s. Buts that’s false news. There are plenty of entrepreneurs who didn’t go to college. Take Bill Gates and Steve Jobs for example. They both dropped out of college and are way more successful than any collage grad. They went on to build billion-dollar owned companies. There are plenty of business owners out there who didn’t go to college and now are really successful and living their best lives. So saying college is the only way to be successful is just not accurate.

I agree with this because what led Miss Lucy to tell the kids in full their future was that she couldn’t bare with the fact that the kids would grow up in the dark not knowing their planned life ahead of them until it eventually reached them. Although Miss Lucy told the children what lies ahead of them, they didn’t fully grasp it.

I agree with the idea that the children are being “told and not told” because they are sort of being guided into growing up to be whatever they want to be without being directly told that. If they are told they’re going to donate their organs right away, then why would they try being ‘creative’ or dreaming about their futures that have already been set out for them? Hailsham doesn’t want the kids to ‘rebel’ against them so the truth is being kept from them indirectly.

I agree with this statement because we get more of a look into one of the Guardians emotions and how she chooses to express it. Madame would have never guessed that Kathy was holding the pillow pretending it was a baby, so it’s confusing on why Madame would start crying at the scene of her doing so. I think when Madame starts crying this is because Kathy is being herself, she’s using her imagination and using her free time to focus on herself, but when she sees Madame she stops. I believe that Madame is sorry for not only Kathy but all of the students at Hailsham who have to grow up on half-truths and lies, and eventually grow up to be a donor when they’re given all these different types of career paths they’ll never be able to choose.

Jocelyn said that she had the question on how the guardians came to be guardians at Hailsham. Do they want to work there or were they forced? I think that the Guardians chose to work at Hailsham, I don’t think they would be forced unless there was a higher hierarchy controlling who comes in and out of Hailsham. I do believe that there are multiple other boarding type schools such as Hailsham raising these kids to be donors, however I think every Guardian that works at Hailsham chose to work there, knowingly aware of what the children will grow up to be. Miss Lucy was clearly uneasy with the fact that the children have not been told in full what they will grow to be, and I feel like before joining Hailsham she had to sign something saying she wouldn’t tell the children in full, which is why I think she was soon fired at the end of part 1.

I don’t think the students at Hailsham would want to escape at this point because they would have already done it and it would’ve been talked about in the book and I also think that they are attached to there guardians since they haven’t seen family like parents or siblings if they have any. They also don’t have a big idea of the outside world because they haven’t experienced anything out of Hailsham.

I didn't get to mention this in my seminar, but I have a theory about Miss Lucy's departure from Hailsham. Although it's not explicitly stated that she was fired, page 111 mentions that Miss Lucy is leaving Hailsham. I believe the altercation she had with Tommy, where she admitted she was wrong about everything and emphasized the importance of artwork as evidence, played a significant role. It seems like the higher-ups might have pressured her to say that before they let her go. Why else would she change her mind so suddenly and then just leave?
