Shakespeare in Love

Summary:
William Shakespeare is a young, famous playwright. He is writing a play which was originally about a pirate's daughter, but after he met Viola De Lesseps, he changes the play so it's about two lovers from rival families. Their affair goes on for the entire time they practise the show. The play reflects their own romance. They eventually break it off, and Viola is going to marry lord Wessex. At the premiere, Viola plays the role of Juliet, and Shakespeare plays Romeo. Even though Viola leaves, Will continues to write plays about her.

Characters:
Will is very ambitious and selfsatisfied with his projects and plays, but he lacks empathy to put himself in other’s situation. He’s very frank and honest about what he wants, and doesn’t let himself be intimidated by other’s expectations.
Viola is passionate about theatre, and hopelessly romantic. She believes that love will not truly bloom on the stage unless a woman and a man play together. Underneath the innocent facade, she rebels against the discrimination of women by dressing up as a man and joining the play.

Themes:
Forbidden romance, eternal love, society norms, personal development, a woman's place in the beginning of the 17th century, the true nature of love, gender roles, love at first sight.

Connection to our theme, Relationships:
It's related to our theme, because it represents a relationship based on forbidden love. This also displays a relationship that doesn't last, because of the norms of society. It also plays with how a play can show the true nature of love.

Call if you need me

Presentation: “Call if you need me” is the story about Dan and Nancy, who is married. They both have other affairs, and they also both know about.

One summer their son is sent to his grandparents, so they see the opportunity to spend some time alone in a cabin. First everything is going fine, and plane to go fishing and other stuff like that. But one afternoon Nancy gets a breakdown and breaks up. Later that night Dan spots some houses outside their cabin, which they both get excited about it, so they have a great night and have sex. The day after Nancy takes the fight to her lover, and even though Dan came to say goodbye, he calls his own lover as the first thing when he comes back to the cabin.

The text is mostly chronological but it has some ashbacks. One ashback can be seen on page 24, 2/3 down the page. Dan talks about his trip with Susan three weeks before he went on a trip with Nancy.

Dan: Dan is married to Nancy. They have a son, Ricard. He doesn't seem concerned about his marriage and has an affair with Susan. They are both middle-aged.
Nancy: She is very despairingly, she mostly wants to go back to Richard. She is tall, long-legged woman with brown hair and eyes and a generous spirit (page 24 at the bottom). She is very organized (page 24 middle). She made a list of the tenants.

Connection to the main theme:

The text connects with the theme realtionship because the text's theme spins around maintaining love in a marriage. In the story, we see how love's passionate ame has burned out in Nancy and Dan's marriage, and they try x it for the son, who is the main reason why they stay together. They try xing it by creating some sort of perfect idealized illusion, but it does not work out for them, and they eventually realize that they are happier being apart

The Valentines Day Tale is a short story from the Tv-Show "Sex and the City"
In Sex and the City, the column writer Carrie Bradshaw writes about love and the dating life in New York. She uses the example of a british woman who moves to New York, starts dating a guy and even goes and looks at apartments together. All of a sudden the guy disappears and is out of her life for good. Bradshaw uses this example to describe how love works in New York, and how you can't rely on the guys that you are dating. She concludes, that if you want to find love, move away from New York. The english woman expects something different than the typical New Yorker, because she was raised in a different setting and society, so she has different values and expectations.
The text also discusses the age of "innocence" or the age where one has sex.

The moral of the valentines day tale is that you are responsible for your own misery or happiness.
