Hard Times is a book written by Charles Dickens, that was published in 1854.In this book the author portrays this time and the people that lived in it. Hard Times is set in a fictional town called Coke Town somewhere in the nort of England in the 19th century. The town is dirty and noisy and the life of the people working in factories is hard. Mr. Gradgring who is the local MP, represents the people of Coke town in parliament. He has set up a school in the town and is very proud of its work. Mr. Gradgrind also works with Mr. Bounderby, a rich banker a factory owner.
From the part we read we can see a 19th century school with a lot of children and only one teacher. That means that the conditions weren't the best. We also can see that the school was very different from today, because they learned a lot of facts, and the teachers were very strict and didn´t trust the students , however today we don't learn just the facts, we also learn soft skills, like leadership or team work, and nowadays the teachers also are very friendly and trust us, back then there was also little to no student freedom while currently there is a great deal of student freedom
So, we are able to see that the school has evolved and nowadays the students are better prepared to the future than in the past.

Learning facts

In this text we can see that Mr. Gradgrind only teaches facts to is kids and in is school.
I kind of agree with Mr. Gradgrind because when you teach facts they know that what they are learning is true, but I also disagree with him bacause the kids have to question themselves to be more inteligent and learn more things.

Table

Facts
Advantages - They know what is right and what is not.
Disadvantages - Because they know what is right and what it not they don´t question themselves.

Ideas
Advantages - They don´t know what is right and what is not.
Disadvantages - Because they don´t know what is right and what it not they question themselves.

Task 2
Summerhill is the oldest children's democracy in the world. It is probably the most famous alternative or 'free' school. It also has got a different way of parenting which eliminates most of the friction and many of the problems experienced by modern families.
Everybody is learning about themselves, and on a bleak January day, with the east wind blowing, things are sometimes not wonderful! In summer time is lush, green and not unlike never-never land. It is more of a family or tribe than a school - full of companionship, laughter and real feelings.
