"The heart and soul of a Navy SEAL is somebody who's committed to their country and committed to their teammates."

Prior to this quote, Wasdin explains how the values of a SEAL often overlook the physical strength of a man. The word 'committed' is used twice, as if to highlight the word, as it is plays a large role in the context of the statement. A navy SEAL must work with his team to accomplish a goal, as none of them can do it alone.

"I can take just about anyone and make them physically strong."

Once again the author explains that the mental strength is just as if not more important than the physical strength of a SEAL. What his quote doesn't say is where the true meaning is found. He says he can make anyone physically strong, but not mentally strong. Mental and emotional strength cannot be trained by another person, only when the individual pushes their limits does mental strength arise.

"A SEAL's belief in accomplishing the mission transcends environmental or physical obstacles that threaten to make him fail."

This quote starts off a new paragraph summarizing how someone who optimizes harsh situations can usually survive. Later Wasdin explains how once on a mission, their resilience to defeat lead them to not a victory, but a chance to see another day. Optimism then became a large subject for a portion of the book and gave the reader a new sense of how important being positive in a negative situation can be.

"Maybe the media wanted to represent America as bullies, but they missed the rest of the story."

Wasdin recalled a story of how he was on a mission in Somalia to help protect the civilians. Their campsite was protected by four extremely skinny Somali guards armed with AK-47's. The small building was like a castle compared to the living conditions of most civilians in that area. The SEALs gave all their leftover MRE's and to the guards, who only ate a small portion so they could save the rest for their families. The guards showed a large amount of appreciation. The interpreter later told them that the guards were thankful the Americans had arrived, leaving their families and risking their lives to help the Somalis. The media often portrays America as a rude, ungrateful force when helping other countries, even when they are not witnessing how the Americans treat the locals.

"I did have a moral concern about having killed for the first time though. I was worried about whether I had done the right thing."

The subject of killing comes up (As it should in a military book) and Wasdin's emotion towards it is quite different compared to other members of team six. Wasdin grew up with very abusive parents who neglected him and physically abused him crossing trauma off the list of his frequent combat emotions. He did not feel stressed, conflicted, nor depressed after his first kill; instead, he struggled with moral issues. Wasdin explained that the victims of his bullet would never eat, sleep, or be with their families again conflicting his mind on whether killing the enemy was the right thing to do. Whilst getting over the fact that he is payed to do this, his experience with moral values is one of the most serious and thought provoking aspects of this read.
