My name is Abigail Valle. I graduated from MAST @ Homestead in 2022 and now I am a student at the MDC Homestead Campus. I was born and raised in Homestead but I'd like to live outside of Florida one day, possibly Rhode Island. I am currently majoring in psychology and I should be graduating from MDC in December and I'd like to transfer to either FSU or UF, I still need to decide. Right now, I am working as a front desk receptionist at a local psychologist office. This is helping me gain a lot of experience in not just administration but also in psychology. It is very interesting to watch it because this is what locals are seeing everyday and going off of what I've heard people say, the amount of new residents moving in to their neighborhoods or buying their land to build apartments or homes is extremely high. This issue has been happening for a very long time. What the worst thing to me is the fact that since it is a lot of low income families that are being offered money to sell their land or houses, sometimes they will take it because they believe that extra money is what is best for their families. But to place them in to an area where they are more susceptible to being flooded and will just make them waste more money for damage costs is extremely unfair. In the video the man explained, when you move the people who live here out, the area loses it's culture and I completely agree. The people that have lived there forever is what makes the place, it's not the area. The issue of climate gentrification shows a lack of care for peoples lives.
Why would you want to live in a place where they don't care for the people and their wellbeing?

This video was all about the underlying toxins in our personal care products that are affecting us everyday but we don't even notice. In the video, she lists many different chemicals and less than 20% of all chemicals have been screened by the FDA safety plan. Since there has not been a lot of testing done on what happens to the body if these are used, why is it put into products we use everyday? Many of the chemicals are not dangerous but there are neurotoxins, carcinogens, and reproductive toxins. The video explains how the cosmetics industry can move away from chemicals and find more natural and safer alternatives. Since there are no laws forcing the industry to stay by the regulations, people are pushing Congress to pass a law/laws to regulate the cosmetic companies and prevent the use of toxins in their products.

Though there is a sense of simplicity when talking about putting up solar panels and wind turbines to bring electricity to the US, it is actually a very difficult process. Currently, 66% of Vermonts energy source is renewable energy but one of their issues like the rest of the states would be the capacity of the power lines. They cannot create another area of wind turbines or it will be over the 250 watt capacity of the vermont power lines. 

This issue is relevant throughout the rest of the US. Though we have the space to put solar panels and wind turbines, the location is what makes it the hardest. A study by Princeton showed that the solar panels and wind turbines would be best fit for the middle of the US. This causes the issue of having to build more and bigger transmission lines that will have to pass through a lot of private land. But to build this new grid it will cost the US about $320 billion. The US is currently working on having 42% of our energy come from renewable sources by 2050.

The oceans cover 71% of the Earth’s surface. Billions of people rely on the ocean and its resources for their livelihoods. Not only does it provide crucial necessities in our lives but it also absorbs the heat and energy produced by greenhouse gases and reduces the emissions which stabilizes the Earth’s climate. But how can we effectively use the ocean without harming it? Studies from the UN explains “In order for oceans, seas and marine resources to successfully contribute to human well-being, ecosystem integrity, with properly functioning biogeochemical and physical processes, is required.” This means in order for the ocean to be used we also have to put in our own effort to keep it functioning properly. To keep moving forward, the people need to take action to reduce the negative impact made by creating more sustainable uses of resources. In order to properly protect what we have our goals should include focuses on climate change, marine pollution, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, and the loss of habitats and biodiversity

It's definitely a better energy source from what we're using now but since wind farms need so much space the building process has been slow. "If anything disturbs the air flow, it creates turbulence, making the turbine less efficient." Each wind turbine needs to be well spaced or it wouldn't be functional, this is one of the biggest reasons for setbacks.

Sea-level rise has accelerated in recent decades due to increasing ice loss in the world’s polar regions. Latest data from the World Meteorological Organization shows that the global mean sea-level reached a new record high in 2021, rising an average of 4.5 millimeter per year over the period 2013 to 2021. Marine heatwaves have doubled in frequency, and have become longer-lasting, more intense and extensive. The majority of heatwaves took place between 2006 and 2015, causing widespread coral bleaching and reef degradation. In 2021, nearly 60 percent of the worlds surface experienced at least one spell of marine heatwaves. The UN Environment Programme says that every one of the worlds coral reefs could bleach by the end of the century if the water continues to warm. Rising temperatures increase the risk of irreversible loss of marine and coastal resources. Today, widespread changes have been observed, including damage to coral reefs and mangroves that support ocean life, and migration of species to higher latitudes and altitudes where the water could be cooler. Currently, more than half of the world’s marine species may stand on the brink of extinction by 2100. About 60 percent of the world's marine ecosystems has already been degraded or are being used unsustainably at a 1.1 C increase. A warming of 1.5°C threatens to destroy 70 to 90 percent of the coral reefs, and a 2°C increase means a nearly 100 percent loss

Many countries are also affected because of improper water sanitation. This sanitation can cause many health issues like, cholera, dysentery, or polio. It could even go so far as death. But, unfortunately billions of people lack access to safe water and sanitation due to living in impoverished countries. Amber emphasizes the importance of clean water and sanitation and believes people have slowly gone back to caring less about sanitation after COVID-19 while before they were a lot more cautious due to what was spreading. However, because of the lack of access to water and sanitation, many organizations are working on expanding this access in developing countries to help bring clean water to the people.
