Like Mr. Saenz, I greet my students at the door each day. I find that in the 15 minutes from when they come in and do morning work (Kindergarten - so its play dough, legos, etc), I can connect quickly with several students. I try to make sure I talk with each student at least every other day. I give ample opportunities to make choices when age appropriate - during writer's workshop they can chose their place to work, and during centers they get to chose (with the expectation that they not go to the same one more than once a week).

Whenever I can I try to use the interests of my students when choosing books to read in small group. I know what my students interests are because of the student interest inventories they complete. I give students interest inventories throughout the year, not just at the beginning. Student interest grow and change so keeping yourself updated on what interest your students in a year long endeavor.

I build relationships with my students by greeting them, having lunch with them as a reward positive behavior, and continuously discussing their interests and events in their lives. I give my students a choice during Words Their Way of what types of assignments they would like to complete using their words. I also often give them the choice of different math apps or math activities during our math lessons. I sometimes allow students choice for seating but also have run into issues monitoring their computer use and school appropriate behavior. I have realized from this training that there are many more opportunities throughout the day to provide students with choice and that I need to take advantage of those opportunities.
