This week we were introduced to the course and found that every two weeks we would have to produce an original composition inspired by music found in different decades. This week was 50's-60's music. My first thoughts towards creating a piece of music was Rock n' Roll and Rockabilly music- bands like Bill Haley & His Comets, Chuck Berry, the early Beatles and Elvis sprung to mind. This lead me to think of how simplistic most of the songs were from this era- usually a simple 12 bar blues played fast and up-beat. Moreover the music from this decade was usually quite guitar based, with especially electric guitars being a 'modern' and 'in' thing. Effects on the guitars were not widely used, therefore guitars were mostly very clean and bright sounding.
However some songs were quite complex with key changes to closely related chords and the use of many chords in the key. Songs like this were often accompanied by orchestra's/string sections- songs that sprung to my mind were Runaway - Del Shannon and slightly later songs like Oh Darling - The Beatles and I Need Your Love So Bad - Peter Green. I thought that this could be replicated with keys as I am in a group with a singer, bassist and keyboard player.

Here is a list of the songs I have just previously mentioned:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziLagAgoPCE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3bmdBdFIWo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtmW2ek7WkQ

When I got into the rehearsal rooms and shared my ideas others had had the same idea about rock n' roll and the use of a 12 bar blues structure. Therefore straight away we basically had a good structure and rhythm to our song. The bass would be playing a walking bass line using major arpeggios of the chords, I would be playing a similar 'walking' riff whilst the keys would be playing syncopated rhythms- very much a blues influence which also influenced Rock n' Roll. We also decided to have a fast tempo, again a decision influenced by the genre during this time period. Moreover we all agreed that an guitar solo introduction should be used to start our song, which is how artists like Chuck Berry and The Beach Boys would often do. I played in the A minor pentatonic scale, throwing in parts from the A major pentatonic scale.

Link to A Minor Pentatonic Scale Diagram:
https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwi3mci82sTRAhUFuRQKHSvZDvMQjRwIBw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.synapticstudios.com%2F2009%2Fguitar-lessons%2Fscales-looking-for-patterns-and-the-a-minor-pentatonic-box-scale%2F&psig=AFQjCNFC0DbXLBi9ZJcSA2f8a6jAbMkhtw&ust=1484588820349276

Link to A Major Pentatonic Scale Diagram:
https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwi87LHS2sTRAhXBtxQKHUcvDBIQjRwIBw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fjguitar.com%2Fscale%2FA%2FMajor%2520Pentatonic&psig=AFQjCNEah1XwmfCVP4wdJWk7OVf7_p953g&ust=1484588865917115

Lyrics at first were hard to think of, however we were prompted to look at songs from the time period and see what they were talking about. I had put forward a melody which fitted against the chords that we were using- A, D and E (I, IV and V chord progression). The lyrics from 'Rock Around the Clock' greatly inspired our lyrics- the same story-telling style was used as well as singing the dominant seventh note of the chord towards the end of the bar. Here are the lyrics to the song that we got down:

Walked up the the party thought I'd have a good time
Didn't know we'd be dancing all through the night

Dance dance dance dance oh
dance dance dance dance
Oh lets dance

Threw on my dance shoes and I called for a cab
On the way for a night that'll be so mad

Where we'll Dance dance dance dance oh
dance dance dance dance
Oh lets dance

Well when i came home around 11 o clock,
knew I'd never forget that night where we rocked

And that dance dance dance dance oh
dance dance dance dance
Oh lets dance

True to Rock n' Roll w decided to add lead solo breaks for each instrument. Our structure was V C Solo V Solo V Solo Ending.
I did the first solo, again using parts from the A maj/min pentatonic scale trying to replicate riffs that were used in this genre of music as well as improvising. Here are some examples that I recorded:

Our keyboard player played the second solo and the bass played the final solo. During the ending we combined harmonies similar to that found in the song 'Oh Boy' - Buddy Holly, with techniques used by nearly every rock and roll band (an improvised ending!!). We went through the final 12 bars, and over the top of this i was playing the chords at high positions on the fret board along with lots of vibrato from the tremolo bar; this technique I had observed being used by Hank Marvin in the Shadows. We repeated chords V and IV twice to show the listener the song was coming to an end, and then used a classic ending to finish the song- a chromatic rundown from a high A note to a lower E, then use thee A major scale to move back up to the first note (all of this whilst all then rest of the instruments have stopped), where everyone plays the final A chord.
I thought our performance went quite well- all the levels were quite good, everyone had the structure noted down well in their heads as well as what parts they were playing, therefore I think overall we put on a good performance. Peer evaluation told us our song fitted the right criteria- it was clearly influenced from 1950's-60's Rock n' Roll, and it was also a catchy 'foot-tapper'. People struggled to give constructive criticism which is very good, however one person suggested we add a little more to the chorus; either different melodies or lyrics to keep the song interesting for the listener

I would enjoy to use the performance else where- it felt good to produce and perform, and this feeling would be put across easily to the audience making it an enjoyable experience. I would want to add some drums onto our composition as personally I did feel it was lacking this, and didn't feel complete to me. We did have the option of using a loop pedal however we couldn't get it to work (I would also prefer a human drummer!!!)

This part of the course is mainly dedicated to playing song covers. The week before we set aims to gel together as a band well and start preparing a song for next week. We decided to chose Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana and Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinand (which was off the list.).
Here are the two original songs from YouTube respectively:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTWKbfoikeg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhCXAiNz9Jo

Our aims for the lesson were to-
- jam together, gel and try to get a connection between us all which in the long term will lead to a better performance
- be able to get the songs we chose up to a playable standard (not gig ready)
- chose more songs to learn or practise the current ones so that they would be ok to be used next week

After warming up independently we soon found that we knew more covers as a band than we previously thought, and within the first 30 mins we were able to play the following songs to a very good standard:

Lithium - Nirvana

Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High - Arctic Monkeys

I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor - Arctic Monkeys

R U Mine - Arctic Monkeys

Do I Wanna Know - Arctic Monkeys

We also got Mardy Bum, When the Sun Goes Down and Arabella which are all by the Arctic Monkeys, Supersonic and Don't Look Back In Anger by Oasis up to a playable standard (playable meaning we can all get through the song however with a few mistakes from us). All the songs listed so far are fairly simple to play, therefore my technique on guitar wasn't particularly tested, however I do know that many of the fills used by the Arctic Monkeys can be challenging on drums, as well as Dave Grohl's rhythms on Nirvana tracks. Our drummer didn't know every fill for every song, which would make it our interpretation of the song, not an exact replica. If we are aiming for an exact cover of the song these would need to be learnt in the near future. Our bassist knew all the chords to the songs as he got the chord sheets on his phone and played them. This really helped get the ball rolling allowing us to play together without having to learn each other the songs, however it meant that some iconic and memorable parts of the song were not included, so these would need to be learnt for next time. The same goes for me too- I know all the chords for each song and the song structure, however there may be little ornaments or licks which could only be found by looking at tabs or listening to the tracks.

From the two songs that we had chosen to learn 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' went very well. We had all practised and listened to the song at home which made rehearsing the song to gigging standard very easy- everyone knew their parts leading to a smooth and solid performance. The two things I would like to improve about the performance are communication/stage presence and extra effects. During rehearsal I think that we all have a tendancy to look at our instruments, just to make sure that we don't make any mistakes. However if w were to do this on stage audience members would probably not enjoy our performance as much as they could do. Once we are all quite confident with what we are playing I think it would be beneficial to treat our rehearsal as another performance- so that when we do get in a performance it fels more natural to put on a show and entertain audience members. With extra effects I'm talking about pedals that Kurt Cobain used along with his grungy sound- during the solo and verses the guitar has delay, reverb and a modulation on top (either a phaser or chorus- I will have to look it up!). I have pedals that provide this at home however there is a certain amp in the rehearsal rooms that has all these effects built in, so a good idea would be for me to use this amp or borrow it every time we rehearse this song.
The second song was 'Take Me Out' and we spent the majority of our time practising it together, which wasn't totally ideal. We managed to play it together however mostly without vocals- they were sang during the intro and chorus; therefore for next week these need to be learned so that we can get it up to a gigging standard. Before the rehearsal I had only looked at the chord sheet, which after listening to the song before we practised it, sounded slightly wrong. Here is the webpage I looked at:

https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/f/franz_ferdinand/take_me_out_ver2_crd.htm

Moreover the song had a lot more to it than just playing chords, therefore for next week I was going to learn all these parts to the record and get the right sound- I noticed the guitars were quite trebely with a small amount of gain. From this I don't think we met every aim that was set at the start of the rehearsal- Take Me Out was definitely not a good enough standard which we will have to improve on.
Here are the bullet points of things everyone in the band needs to work on:

Everyone needs to keep practising Smells Like Teen Spirit regularly so that it is always open as an option to use in live performance situations. The same goes for the AM songs and Lithium - Nirvana which I stated were at a very good standard previously.

Joe - as the singer he needs to know all the melodies, lyrics and structure to the song so that next week we can throroughly practise the song and get it nailed (Take Me Out). Moreover in the record there are 2 guitars, so Joe would also need to learn the chords on the guitar just to fill up the sound.

Joel - as the drummer Joel needs to know the structure of the song well which would mean listening to the track a lot and practising along with it. I would say mainly the drum part were the tempo slows down and takes you into the verse is where he should mostly look at. He already knew most of the drumming patterns, but they weren't exact to the record which he will also need to work on.

Kian - Kian already knew the song structure which helped him work out what notes he should be playing however like me he looked at the same chord sheet and worked out what notes to play. So for next week he will have to get the bass tab and learn it properly, as he was missing out some key points which you can here in the song (e.g. a bass rundown during the chorus).

Me - like Kian I only looked at the chords for the song, however I did know the structure and main riff which is played throughout most of the song. However the intro I couldn't get my head around from just listening to it therefore for next week I will get the guitar tab and learn the song properly.

For our first band rehearsal I'd say we did ok- things could've been more organised ie. everyone knowing the songs that where to be rehearsed to a good standard to make the rehearsal smooth, professional and worthwile. We were quite creative during our practise but in future I would prefer us to be more prepared. On our sheet I think that we rated ourselves 7/10 for productivity.

Today we recorded our song, Dance, which we worked on last week. After listening to the feedback we got from last weeks session we decided to make some changes to our song. We decided to throw in some more backing vocals in the chorus- those that were mentioned in my last post (the ones similar to the Buddy Holly song!). This added more layers to the chorus, therefore giving it an outstanding texture compared to the breaks and verses- giving the song a more clear structure. Moreover my guitar parts were slightly changed- the intro solo had the same concept however I could not remember exactly what I played last week, so I played it slightly different than what we had practised. Also I changed the way that I played the solo in my lead break compared to last week. This one was more structured and followed the chords that were being played in the background. Instead of just improvising, I used chords within the same pentatonic scales which worked very well. For example fretting the G and B strings at the 7th fret abd slightly bending them whilst a D chord is being played in the background. Moreover an A5 chord by barring the 5th fret on the B and E strings, along with a string bend on the G string. Here are the two examples I have just mentioned played acoustically to demonstrate what I have just explained:

https://youtu.be/ZYVafs_QKmc
https://youtu.be/lFZoCqiXkS4

I felt by changing the solo and not just randomly improvising gives the performance a more professional feel, and that if we were to take this performance elsewhere would create iconic parts- things that the audience could relate to and remember.

Here is our final rcording of the song-

This week our group was slightly different as Kian was ill, and did not come into college therefore this really hindered our rehearsal. This week I was in a group with Joel and Joe. Joe arrived late to the rehearsal therefore whilst waiting for him Joel and I had a play around with 'Figure it Out' - Royal Blood. Although we had no singer for this song it adds to our repertoire and could be used in a live performance as the song went well. Also, I have learnt the guitar part to another song of the list- Every Breath You Take by the Police, which I showed to Joel and we were messing around with that waiting for Joe to arrive. Although me and Joel more or less know our parts I'm not sure whether we will be learning it as a band, even though we are halfway there. The song is very high to sing and even when the key is changed it still seems this way. But we'll have a talk about it and see what the rest of the band members have to say.
Our aims had to be slightly altered when we knew Kian was not coming in- instead of getting songs nailed we decided to take a step back, and get everyone's individual parts perfect/near perfect so that when we practised again as a full band we would be very tight. When Joe arrived we had a warm up playing some of his original material but more or less got straight into playing Smells Like Teen Spirit. This went well- vocals at some points were a littl flat but no one was too bothered at this stage as Joe was still warming up and its quite a hard song to sing. Also we played Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High to a very good standard too- I believe that the last two stated songs are probably our strongest as everyone knew and liked the songs beforehand so learning them was not a chore. The songs aren't too technically challenged, however I believe that this allows us to concentrate on replicating the sound of the artists which at gigs many people would like to hear.
Another aim of ours was to try and progress with Take Me Out. We managed to get most of the song to a playable standard; this week most people had a better idea of how the song went with lyrics learnt as well as the correct guitar parts from me. But knowing the structure did let the performance down slightly as some people were ending or starting chorus' too soon or too late etc. To get this song in the bag people will need to literally know the structure off by heart, with the same going to me too.
Without bass made it a challenge for us as the sound always feels like it is missing something, however I believe we met the targets that were set to be achieved by the end of the session. Another aim was to chose and start working on another song and we chose Jammin' - Bob Marley. We decided on this as for the assessment we need to show evidence of 3 or more contrasting covers, therefore we have grunge, indie rock/Britpop and finally reggae.
For next week:

Kian needs to catch up with us and get listening to the reggae song that we have chosen

Everyone needs to learn the songs structure off by heart to limit mistakes

Everyone needs to start looking at and learning Jamming

Keep practising the songs we already have at a gigging standard

Again we did not recieve any feedback from people in other groups or our tutor, but I'd say that the band worked well together even though we were missing a member, so I would our productivity 6/10. So far I think that our stage presence techniques have improved the most- now that we are all quite confident with most of the songs that we are learning it's a lot easier to practise putting on a performance in the rehearsal room.

Like I have stated previously the songs that we are performing covers of aren't especially challenging for us as a band, however accuracy of each member is getting better- silly mistakes are not occuring as often which leads to a better performance. Therefore our playing technique is clearly improving however in less obvious ways.

This week we had changed our decades for musical inspiration up to the 60's and 70's. Therefore bands that popped into my head straight away were T - Rex, The Sweet, Queen, The rolling stones and the Beatles. This really left a wide open door for inspiration as just this small list of bands cover many genres.
However despite the such wide variety in influences we could've chose we didn't manage to pinpoint what we all wanted to do.
Communication between some people was very poor, but despite some peoples best efforts by the end of our 3 hour session we still had no idea what we could play or even get ready for next week where we would have to record this original song.
I think that the new group that we were put in basically had friendship groups, making it hard to get our points across. I believe some people should've been more professional as the level of musicianship in the room was quite high, but as I've previously said no work was done as we didn't 'gel' at all.
For next week so that we don't have a repeat performance I will try and get something down, either a chord sequence or song structure to be inspired by. Hopefully this will allow us to get the task done after a little nudge in the right direction!

This wek we were back to our full potential with all four members present in the band - Joel, Kian, Joe and me.
Our aims for this week were:

To start to practise Bob Marley's 'Jammin'

Get Take Me Out to a better standard (especially vocals during intro and chorus)

Practise the rest of our songs so we don't forget how to play them!

We firstly went through our good songs, making sure we were all ok with them which didn't take long and ticked off one of the aims. We also found a few more covers that everyone already knew and that could be used in future performances- 'Come Together' and 'Octopus' Garden' - The Beatles. These were good however both Joel and Kian were having to improvise as they didn't know the songs 100% (But had heard of them before!). Moreover if we were to take up these songs in our practised repertoire I would need to learn the guitar parts more accurately- now I know how they go and get a similar improvised part however it is not exact to the record.

We finally got to have a go at Jammin after our warm up with these familiar songs. Some people hadn't looked at the song beforehand ie. the chords and structure, however we all knew the song which made life a lot easier in giving a quick tutorial. Also there are only 4 chords throughout the whole song which made it even easier! The song was pretty much perfect, except for the part where the song breaks down and plays a chord per bar. Instead, thanks to Joe's quick thinking we just carried on with the verses; which actually worked quite nicely even if its not a total replica of the original song. We do really need to get the song right so for next time we will all have to listen to the song and see how it goes (possibly look at the tab for it).

We practised 'Take Me Out' next, which was ok. I think that due to Kian being absent last week it has semt to throw us all out, with me forgetting the structure of the song, lyrics being forgotten etc. This meant we had to quickly listen to the track before going through it again- I made a mental note of the actual structure of the song whilst Joe reminded himself of the lyrics. After going for the song a second time we realised that it wasn't going to work without practising the song at home again and making sure each individual part is perfect.
Therefore I think that we didn't met all of our aims set for today- although we got 'Jammin' to a decent standard on our first rehearsal of it and our other songs were still at gigging standard, quite honestly I think that Take Me Out has really taken a step back. Therefore for next week it will have to be our priority to get it sorted and sounding good.

For next week we need to work on the following:

Listen and make sure Take Me Out is much improved

Keep working on Jamming so that we have a good performance as well as an accurate one

Keep on top of songs that we all know!

We got 3 of our songs recorded by Mike today too- they all went well and received good feedback from him- all of us were tight playing together with no noticable errors. However he did add that 'Jammin' was good, but didn't have the same flow as the other songs; almost robotic/stiff. I think this is partly because as a band we have only just started playing thee song, but I'm sure this will improve as people get used to playing the song and the music can flow with more feeling.
For 'Take Me Out' I feel that our technique in that song has lacked today, as I have previously stated. Hopefully it was just one of those days were you can't get it right!! My technique has improved over this rehearsal when trying to fill out the sound in a 3 piece band and singer. At the start of the rehearsal I found it quite hard to get the right sound for my guitar (sound as in not th EQ but the texture and dynamics of the song). In the original track they have many guitarists as well as a keyboard/organ player, which really helps to fill-out the sound- its a lot harder with just 1 guitar. But after starting off just skanking I improved my technique by incorperating it with syncopated chords too (mirroring the keyboard off the track).
I think we had a few positive outcomes from today however Take Me Out really did let us down, therefore I'd say our productivity was 6/10 again.

Today was supposed to be our second chance at creating an original song influenced by 60's and 70's music, however I had been asked by some Confetti Uni students if we were able to record some tracks for their work- which we agreed to do. Therefore we missed the lesson!!
My general ideas that I had developed from last week was a chord sequence. I think that I took my inspiration mostly from 2 bands - the Sweet and T-Rex. Here are some of the songs which inspired me-
The Sweet - Ballroom blitz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewFBuYHldeY

Suzi Quatro - Devil Gate Drive
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vFTksaposs

T-Rex - 20th Century Boy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JB6WZu8IAZg

My structure mostly followed a 12 bar blues structure in E major, but instead of a turn around of chord V and IV, I used a chord from the minor scale (C5) then to B5 and A5 (5 chords are chords with no third, therefore aren't major or minor). On my guitar settings I decided to go for quite a crunchy setting- a bit of overdrive/distortion making it sound 'muddy'. This was a common thing done by guitarists in the 60's and 70's as distortion had newly been invented and used in a lot of songs (firstly by the Kinks who accidently ripped their amp/speaker causing a new distorted guitar sound). Moreover the actual structure of the song was a common thing used by Glam Rock bands like T-Rex; a 12 bar blues style structure was used by Marc Bolan. There's a video I've recorded showing you this attached to the bottom I
                                                                                          I
                                                                                         V

To improve on this I would've liked to have took my ideas to the rest of the group so they could be developed- lyrics written and other instruments like bass and keys added to add texture to the song.

Again we were missing a member!! Back in room 1 again however this time Joe was absent after going on holiday. I thought this was a shame as he sings on every track we do, as well as playing rhythm guitar too; therefore it felt really empty when we played without him. But, we got through most of it without him- I had a go at singing to try and get our rehearsal back to normal. I was with Kian and Joel and our aims for the day were to work on our performance of 'Jammin', try and make the music go hand in hand with the performance, letting it flow (trying to improve after listening to Mike's review of our performance. Another aim was to again keep on top of our songs that we already have at a good standard (this will crop up in every padlet post!!). Our final aim, which wasn't written onto the sheet, was to make the rehearsal worthwhile without the input of a key member- I had a go at singing some of the songs however they were not great as I'm not a singer.
We were supposed to record our songs again to see how we'd progressed however we decided not to as you don't get a true representation with members missing.

Basically we had a very similar day as to the 19th January when our bass player, Kian, was missing. Firstly we went through songs like I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor, Do I Wanna Know and Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High- these are ones which I know all the lyrics and guitar parts to, allowing me to warm up mentally and physically ready for the other songs. Our first song off the learning list was to go over Take Me Out. I was comfortable playing and singing the intro and chorus', however I didn't know all the lyrics to the verses therefore just played my guitar through this part. As I'm not used to singing my guitar playing wasn't perfect however it was enough for the other guys to play along with. We decided to practise the vocals separate from my guitar playing so I wouldn't be doing it first time, which really helped me. I think that this method should be used in the future, not just for vocals but if drums and bass are unsure etc. it really did help me out.
The point where the intro slows down into the verse was a lot better this week- instead of doing it over 2 bars, Joel has learnt the song and started to play it over the 4 bars, just like the original track. Moreover Kian now properly knows the chords in the intro therefore compared to the first week I believe our cover has really improved.
We didn't get chance to go over Jammin, even though was was 2nd on the priorities list. This was partly down to me not knowing the lyrics and chords well enough to sing and play, and we spent a lot of time working on Take Me Out.
From this we didn't meet all the aims that were set as like I have just previously stated, we didn't work on Jammin however the rest of the aims I think we met. I'd rate our productivity at 7/10 (respectively)- although we had Joe missing by the end of the session it felt as if we had achieved something. My singing technique has been developed from this session- previously I had only really sang backing vocals so to sing full versions of songs is quite a big step up for me, even if it wasn't always perfect. It has boosted my confidence when singing aloud. It's also helped with my communication and performance technique to, and I would think the same would go for Kian and Joel. Instead of constantly looking at the fretboard I was forced to keep my head straight with the occasional glance down, therefore for on stage this would capture an audience's attention more when you are looking confident and out to them (this would produce a better performance). We did speak to Mike however we didn't receive any feedback as we were missing Joe, therefore were not filmed!
Although we didn't receive any feedback Mike did inform us that he wanted us to learn a song for the last 2 weeks of college, which had been especially chosen for our band. This song was Ride - Leave Them All Behind. Therefore ASAP I will be listening to the track and starting to learn it so the rest of the group aren't waiting for me!!
For next week:

Get Take Me Out down as a band!!

Get Jammin' down/improved from the week before

Keep on top of our 'already learnt songs'

Start looking at and learning the song that Mike told us to learn.

Here's the song we have to learn-
Ride - Leave Them All Behind

This week, after our lesson being delayed by 30 minutes in the morning we mostly had our songs recorded, however concentrating on how each member of the ensemble performed as a soloist.
I was working in a group with Kian, Joel and Joe. We set targets of performing two of our songs to Mike at a good standard, with little/no errors. Another aim was to have our other songs ready to play and be recorded for after half term.
Within the first hour we achieved our first aim, with Mike coming in and recording us playing Nirvana - Come As You Are and Arctic Monkeys - Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High. He mainly gave feedback individually however he said we gave a good performance- Joel's drums were solid with no audible errors, Kian's bass playing was also tight and accurate however he did mention flair, which can be hard to assess. This advice has helped me understand how to improve, so I now have a better idea of what to do when I am recorded.
They wanted to record me playing on Come As You Are, as a lead guitarist in the ensemble. But although I often play it with the band I am still slightly unsure of the songs structure and how to play its guitar solo. I think that in our next session it is very likely that I will be recorded, therefore for then I need to have learnt and feel a lot more confident about the song.
After recording our first two songs Mike left and we got on with practising the other two songs that will be recorded; Jammin' and Smells Like Teen Spirit. This week during Jammin' Joe played rhythm guitar, which allowed me to improvise more and play with more "flair" as previously, when playing chords, I couldn't do much else except rhythm guitar as it left the performance sounding a bit bare (in the original track there are also Keys playing on the song). Therefore Joe is really acting as the keyboardist however playing the same chords but on a guitar. Mike did come back into the room at one point, giving us some feedback about Jammin'. He said that it didn't exactly sound reggae, and that we should loosen up to play more relaxed. Since we started learning the song I have always played the keyboard intro chords throughout the song, with the same rhythm pattern. This is syncopated however I do understand why Mike wasn't getting the reggae feel.
Moreover, our practise of Smells Like Teen Spirit went quite well- I believe its one of our better songs that we play as a band. Everyone knows exactly what they're doing with this song with errors rarely being made. I do know all the guitar parts for this song therefore I would much prefer to be recorded on this song, however I will still be learning Come As You Are to the record.

So for next week I need to:

Learn come as you are perfectly ready to be recorded

Keep on top of practise of the other songs in our repertoire

Work on my improvisation during Jammin, as when this song was played live a big part of Reggae is improvisation. Also listen to the song and get the guitar part down

Everyone else in the band just really needs to keep on top of practise of our repertoire making sure next week they can still give a very good performance of every song that I've stated over the previous weeks. I'd say that our productivity was lower than normal, as we spent the majority of time recording song/s. But in the time where we did practise, it went well and I'd say that we were productive- 8/10.
I'd say that our performance technique has significantly improved since we have started being filmed- all of us as a band have stepped up to the mark and I think we are a lot more professional than at the start of the course. I'm judging this by people have stopped just twiddling and playing nonsense, talking about things that aren't relevant to our rehearsal (most of the time!!) and prioritising songs that need to be practised or learnt.

This week I temperarily changed groups into group room 1, where they required a bassist for their material. We were still writing songs using inspiration from 60's and 70's music, however this group had chosen a totally different way to look at it. Our inspiration this week came a lot more from the Sex Pistols, with a darker sound more alike Black Sabbath. The lyrics were rebellious, with guitars detuned to drop D with lots of use of 5 chords (G5, A5). Power chords were a common feature of punk music, as many manufactured bands had little/no experience playing instruments therefore the music contained the 5th chords as they are quite easy to play. It was a similar story too while I was playing bass- I added little ornamentation, literally plucking each individual note with a heavy use of quavers in the rhythm - 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + . Here is a quick video as demonstration:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZqcYHxA9Qg

I don't own a bass therefore I used an octave effect to play the bass on my guitar then retuned to demonstrate how the guitars are used during punk.

Punk lyrics are usually quite rebellious and can often be used to make political stances and tell stories. A really good example of this would be Nellie the Elephant by the Toy Dolls.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eti21PVHXrg
Our piece has been inspired lyrically by this, with our lyrics telling the story and preparing the listener for the 'King'. The arrival of the king is shown musically, with the music building up after the chorus', almost filling the gap where there are no lyrics, then dropping away when we go back into the verses.

This week again we had to film some of the songs we have learnt, both individually (as a soloist) and together as a band (part of an ensemble). I made sure that I had practised everything needed from last week, to ensure that I would give a good, solid performance. Also, for Jammin' I listened to the song more and found I was playing it slightly wrong, after feedback from Mike listened to the track and made sure I had it nailed. Beforehand I wasn't particularly skanking, more playing what the keys were playing. However after listening to the track I found out what the guitar part actually does- this will really help to achieving the correct reggae sound. After a quick practise we were filmed by Mike, however both times it wasn't me who was being focussed on. The practise payed off however and these performances allowed me to further prepare for when I am the main focus of the video. From my own personal practise I now know all the structure of Come As You Are, and have learnt the solo from the song. This was relatively easy and didn't take that long. I basically listened to the track and heard what to do (many of Curt's solo's follow a simple pentatonic scale)- here is a pic of one of these scales:

http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjWvfCkpL_SAhWlAcAKHTwDAakQjRwIBw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fmattwarnockguitar.com%2Fpentatonic-scales&psig=AFQjCNHMQGX_PIKlhFj8-_ofd4nULX-gWw&ust=1488800493928521

We got both previously named tracks recorded within the first hour- I am going to be filmed sometime next week for my solo performance.

After a quick break we somehow started playing a song together that none of us knew that we all knew it or knew of it. This was Breed - Nirvana. On our first attempt with me following Kian on bass it sounded quite good, therefore we decided that this track could be used as a 4th recording for us all (You had to do a minimum of 4 performances so an extra one will never hurt!). By the time we had got into the song the time was up and we had to pack away but we decided to learn the song note perfect for next week, so it could be recorded also. Our productivity for this rehearsal session was very good- I'd rate ourselves either a 8 or 9 out of ten. So, for next week-

Personal practise of Breed, Come As You Are and Jammin' so that I can give a good performance when it is my turn to be recorded

Everyone else should be doing the same as well as practising our repertoire.

This week we didn't get chance to record our performances, as Mike was busy filming other groups. This gave us a couple of extra hours practise for when we are filmed in the near future. I was in a group with Kian, Joe and Joel. Everyone had done their homework which made our lives a lot easier; we started with learning Breed. We plugged in an aux cable into the P.A and just reminded ourselves of the song. I had been copying the bass line to this song last week, which turned out to be wrong- during the verses Curt plays a riff commonly found in rock and roll music, a string bend into the first and second string creating a 5th chord (chord with no major/minor 3rd in it). Here is an example of this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TbypP_5FuY

The rest of our repertoire practise went well- we just seemed to bang them out one after the other with no mistakes, which shows how are technique has improved over the last few weeks. I feel confident and ready to be recorded and use this as evidence. I would rate our overall productivity today at about 8/10- we got on very well and went through every song with minimal talking, quite professionally, before having a well earned break then straight back into it all! We've reached the stage where we just really need to evidence what we have done over the past few weeks through Mike's videos, which limits the amount I can really talk about each week. However, for next week it is imperitive that all four of us keep practising our repertoire ready for when I need to be recorded hopefully next week.

This week I was in a group with Joe, Joel and Kian and our inspiration for a composition was the 70's and 80's. The first bands I thought of from this time period was AC/DC, Cream and Dire Straits and gave me a rough idea of what I wanted to create during our rehearsal. We managed to come up with a fully written song (lyrics, chord sequence and structure) within the 3 hours, which we were all very pleased about. I came up with the main guitar riff after messing around with Kian playing the acoustic version of Eric Clapton's Layla crossed with the chord sequence from Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits (Mark Knopfler). At first this was a slow tempo, around 90 BPM, using chords D Minor, C major, Bb Major and A Major (Chords I, VII, VI and V). Chord V is a massive influence from Mark Knopfler; in the key of D Minor you should use A Minor (v) however in Sultans of Swing he uses A Major which gives it a middle eastern feel, as if you were using a harmonic minor scale. This is what I wanted for our song, acting as a hook in the verse to get the listeners attention with something not usually heard.
Another influence came from the White Room by Cream. During the verse it has a rundown similar to what that is used in our song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkae0-TgrRU

The guitar sound I chose for this song represents the AC/DC inspiration for me from the use of guitar, amp and tone settings. I was using an SG along with a Marshall JCM 900 which is exactly what Angus Young uses when playing live. I was looking for a classic rock sound- turning the lead gain to full and using my guitar volume to get the right rhythm sound, then putting it on full for solo work. This gives the guitar a very crunchy sound, like that found in the song Highway to Hell:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEPmA3USJdI

The song stays true to the genres it's inspired by. Many classic rock/rock songs are mainly guitar based and usually include a guitar solo, and so does our song. After the second chorus, which is doubled for extra effect, I start the guitar solo. This wasn't just an improvisation, I made sure the solo was structured- starting off slowly and then finishing on tapping triplets (using your pic hand to tap notes on the fretboard out of your left hand's reach). I wanted it to feel that you were being transported along with the song- after hearing the sound intensify we come to the bridge which is the same chords as the chorus, however played with a different rhythm and use of silence.
However I was influenced too by some more recent music, that of a band called Highly Suspect and another called Royal Blood. Many of these band's songs use something similar to what I was doing- harmonising the voice with the guitar- specifically, using octave notes from notes of the scale of the key. It is hard to describe exactly but here is a quick demo:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TY6dEzBTH4

Here is a song from Highly Suspect demonstrating what I have just described, called Mister Asylum. Hear at the start the octave notes from the scale which harmonise the other instruments. They can also be heard during the chorus too:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyeBWagBax8

Joe had previously written the lyrics that we used for our song, choosing them out of his notebook.

Here is our song that we recorded. currently without a name. We liked it so much that we are going to take our ideas further and look at it for a potential song for our band. To improve on something like this I think we should just make sure everyone knows and agrees with the structure of the song. Also I would like to have a rhythm guitar playing behind me, just so that I can do a little more without having the added pressure of being back in bang on time even if I've just improvised a quick lick
