I am Andrei Lee, an Information Systems student from MMCM. Spent a part of my formative years here in the Philippines, but also some in the US to give some context. As for my Philippine pop culture interests, I do not have many as the language acted as a sort of barrier to my enjoyment, but even then, I still do have some, the main one being music. Even then though, I have not really delved deep into Philippine music so forgive me if my examples could be better. Another would be some films that my friends and I watch for fun, mainly Vhong Navarro ones which I might add, is a product of their time. Those are my main Philippine Pop Culture interests.

I did not think that I would enjoy Philippine music as much as I do now because of some previous stigma that had formed in me that I cannot explain either. But the rediscovery of these titles has been a joy to experience. Rediscovery because most of the songs that I have listened to have just been my older cousins playing these songs when I was a child. Luckily, with Spotify making access to these songs easy, all I have to do is remember a snippet of its lyrics from when I was younger or even hearing it from external sources. It also goes without saying that these songs are just pleasant to listen to.

Music in general incites change within people usually through its message, not necessarily the lyrics, but its message. Sometimes it is explicit in its presentation of a message, but most times it is buried within layers of depth and context. Same goes for Philippine music, some stem from shared experiences among the youth whether that be school crushes, or it can be a commentary one the political landscape of the day. Either way, music is a window into the to the different facets of life within the Philippine context, it may not be an inherently visual medium of media, but the mind does visualize what these songs are trying to convey. With that in mind, the theory wherein consumers seek out media that satisfies their needs can be linked to the enjoyment of music, due to its tackling of different subjects.

As a personal experience, I tend to gravitate to music that resonates with what I am currently feeling. There are times where it's very clear what I am going through and the music I think should accompany my thoughts to gain clarity, but other times, the dark magic of Spotify's shuffle or just my ingrained outlook allows me to reflect on my thoughts and the music playing. It may not be the biggest sample size, but I do understand the theory that we seek out the media we like, whether it may be consciously or subconsciously, music is just mysterious like that. Philippine music is just one very dense drop in the ocean of auditory experiences that I do seek out to enjoy from time to time, and due to my upbringing, I am lucky enough to have somewhat of an understanding on some of the messages this category of music can hold.
