Along with Watson, Holmes arrives at the crime scene. He begins by examining the neighboring house, the sidewalk, and the land. Then he enters the house and examines the corpse, whose face was disfigured. Near the corpse, Holmes finds a woman's wedding ring, and in his pockets a book and two letters: one to Drebber, the other to Stangerson. "RACHE" written in blood on the wall. Police conclude that it is Rachel's half-written name, but Holmes examines the inscription, the dust on the floor and smiles mysteriously.
