My name is Amber Perry and I am a twenty year old student striving to receive a degree in criminal justice from the institution of Prairie View A&M University. I am proud to say that I am a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where crime is prominent but I did not become a product of my environment. In my opinion, as students of higher education it is our responsibility to give back to our communities. Anne Colby defines our civic responsibility as "[being] responsible, responsive, patriotic, and loyal to our nation and society". We can do this by creating helpful programs and engaging in community service learning projects. "Community-based service learning helps students link subject matter to everyday life and develop sense of responsibility to their community". I have yet to engage in any service learning activities, but any individual can do it. I do not believe we need any special characteristics to participate except the desire to upkeep our community. We should not obligate one person or group of people to address the needs of those I'm a democratic society but it should be any community member, outside force, criminal justice official or politician's job to do so.

My name is Desmond Mitchell I'm a freshman at prairie view A&m university. I'm a criminal justice major. I have plans to become a homicide detective in Miami FL. My main goals are making it to the NFL,helping out the needy people/homeless. My grandma was my everything she was my everything she past away 01/06/2014. Also I'm a very responsible young man. I'm very hard working and self motivated. Community service is voluntary service that citizens in the community help with a specific area in the community. HEB is a well known grocery store has a year annual food drive every November. The grocery store gather local churches and community centers together to link up and help serve food, give food, and clothes to those who are in need. I been playing a role in the food drive for three years. There are no specific qualities a person need to be a community service volunteer. Time, patience, and a kind heart is all a person need to help their community. It is every person duty and responsibility to engage and address community service.

Community Service are volunteered services completed by individuals of an organization to benefit a community or it's institutions. I, Brittni Caesar, have myself completed an ample amount of hours in community service. I volunteered at the Boys and Girls club in my hometown as a receptionist. As the receptionist I answered phones, assisted guests, guided children when necessary. I value the experience because most importantly, I love kids. Before an individual can help anyone in any type of services, he or she must be mature and know how to handle certain situations in not only a respectful manner but with a open mind. For example elected representatives, which addresses the needs of others in a democratic society, sometimes enter certain obstacles head first and a open mind.

I'm 18 years old from Dallas, TX. I attended Cedar Hill Collegiate High School, where i graduated with my Associate's degree as well as my diploma. Community service is voluntary work that is intended to help people in a particular area. I began my community service experience freshman year in high school. My school required that each student has a minimum of 500 hours of community service hours by the time we graduated. That's where my journey began. My first community service project was working at a local<strike> </strike>hospital. There, I worked as an information desk clerk. I worked at the hospital up until I graduated from high school. I left there with over 250 hours of community service, and they also awarded me a $1000 scholarship for having helped out so long. My sophomore year in high school, I became apart of Big Brother Big Sister where I played the role as a mentor to young girls. I volunteered there for about a whole school year, receiving 100 hours of community service hours. Finally, my junior year in high school I became apart of an organization by the name of Cedar Hill Action Team (CHAT). CHAT was a non-profit organization in my community that helped out the school teachers with school supplies during the year so that they wouldn't have to come out of there pockets. This was a really big organization and we had many activities that required my help. Overall, I ended up volunteering with that organization too until I graduated from high school. I left that organization with over 300 community service hours, and they awarded me with a flat screen television for college. As you can see, I've done a lot of community service all through out high school. Being apart of different community service organizations skilled me in a lot of different ways, and I was also able to meet people that were really beneficial and helpful. There's really not a specific skill you need in order to engage in community service, I just think you have to have an open mind, be patient, know who your organization, be courteous of others, and main thing is have a great attitude. In a democratic society, it is the responsibility of the civic government to address the needs of others. Community service was a great experience for me because I was able to get a look at how the job industry worked before I even began finding jobs, so when it was time for me to go on job interviews, I had great skills due to my background in community service. Now that I'm in college, I still plan on keeping it going by becoming part of many more community service organizations.
