The Aussies were trying to gauge how far the Turk's trenches were in order to decide the force and velocity of which the bombs were to thrown. In order to do this they would use pulley beef cans, which they despised, so that if the Turks threw them back they knew which ones made it. However, the Turks, who were unaware of this plan, sent a letter back attached to the pulley beef. It was interesting to discover that no one knew whether there was malicious intent behind this letter or just pure gratitude.

I learnt that even during the hard times, there was an unbreakable bond between those in the army. They identified as soldiers, which was most likely due to the fact that they were not conscripted, so that they wanted to be there. This quote also helped me really understand the bond between the soldiers - "Don't care for yourself, care for the man next to you". Which clearly shows that they identified as one unit.
