On another note, the following quote by Laozi stuck with me: "What appears soft and weak can actually defeat what is hard and strong, in as much as what looks fragile is hard in nature" I thought his way of describing human behavior in relation to nature very touching and powerful. I can relate to meeting people who seem timid but have such strong tenacity and passion behind each action. It was of course a more basic outline, so reading through these and getting more background is really interesting. Confucius and i have a lot of the same beliefs in "benevolence", which is similar to the idea of "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". He encouraged people to think independently and interpret what they learn or discover in their own way.
I have never heard of the "Four Books and Five Classics" before, they were very important to scholars back then, so are they still used today? I never knew much about the Confucius ideology but it seems that it is mostly focused on personal relationships and one's relationship with their mind and the earth. It is a difficult idea to wrap my head around but I am excited to learn more about it. I also found the idea of Taoism very intriguing. Learning about Confucius and his influence on China, brings to light many of the norms and nuances that shape the culture. For example, in the reading it outlined that Confucius was passionate about fostering a learning environment for children to become independent learners. Education and family values were held as top priority by Confucius and according to the reading, is still very much so in modern day China. I am wondering how this has shaped the political structure in China. I also wonder how this has manifested into China's society with the increasing influence of western values and teachings. Is the Four Books and the Five Classic's teachings still tested on in schools? I think that the ideas of having spirituality instead of religion is very interesting and a lot more preferable to myself. I also thought that the quote from the Taoist teaching that said that Laozi believed that, "what appears soft and weak can actually defeat what is hard and strong, inasmuch as what looks fragile is hard in nature." I thought that this quote relates very well to nature, water specifically, how it can appear soft and fragile at points, but can even shape mountain ranges by being so fierce! I just really related to the way that the Taoist ideals exemplified a love of nature.

I knew the names, and who started the religions, but I didn't know the full history about the religions. It would have been really interesting to see more in depth some of the traditions and teachings within each religion. I love the idea of benevolence in Confucianism. I think that if more people would practice this principle, half of the problems that would experience in the world now wouldn't even exist. What I would like to know is if Confucianism and Taoism are still practiced in China today? If not, what religion have they been replaced with?

Growing up in between two cultures, I found the differences between American and Chinese culture very interesting in this aspect. In the Chinese culture it is expect that the children will take care of the parents’ retirement plans (that being finances and etc). But in America it’s very ‘separate’ where as the parents either get dropped off at a retirement home or they live alone without the help of any of their children.  I feel like it’s a good and bad thing; because the Chinese always believes in ‘repaying’ especially to the people that raised them. But at the same time it is a lot of responsibility for the children since they will also be supporting a family of their own at that time. Last class Professor Gao mentioned that there is a law in China that Chinese people have to take care of their parents when they are older or they would get punished by the law… I found that a little extreme due to the fact that many people have different circumstances. What if someone had a child that has health problems and they need extra financial support for that reason? I didn't know that the Chinese basically adopted buddhism from India and put their own spin on it. Also, it was cool to connect Yin and Yang to taoism. I've seen that symbol my whole life and knew what it meant but never realized it came from taoism.
