WHO are we empathizing with?

While I would argue there are a few characters in the novel that deserve empathy, Jack, the main character, is the focus. Jack has always felt like a left-out failure; sports, instruments, and random talents and activities are just not his thing. At a college visit, he ends up meeting a girl that changes his world in more ways than one. This story is about him finding his balance between spending time with his family and friends and attempting to save his girl friends life. His girlfriend, Kate, has an illness and Jack takes saving her into his own hands which leads him to run into a few roadblocks along the way. Jack is the glue in his relationships, he is ‘responsible’ for holding everyone together.

What do they need to DO?

Jack finds it upon himself to make saving Kates life his responsibility because he cannot lose a love like hers. While attempting to go above and beyond to spend each waking moment with Kate, he also needs to make sure he does not forget about his friends and family. Jack struggles with a task like this because it is not easy to balance it all. He finds himself making many decisions with good intentions of seeing everyone, but they often fail and leave someone upset. Jack has to make decisions between life or death and girl friend or best friends, but somehow the two scenarios intertwine with each other. The only way Jack thinks he will be successful is if he maintains all of his relationships while saving Kates life.

Jack sees a lot of beauty in his life; his family, his best friend, his girlfriend, and his dream college. He sees his best friends falling in love and his parents showering each other with love. With all of this love also comes ambulances, ridiculously slow elevators, hallways, and oxygen tanks. He sees his success, alongside his friends, by graduating high school and moving on to college- all of them hoping to get into the same school. Throughout the novel he sees his friends admiring him but also despising him at some points, depending on the day.

What do they SAY?

Jack has consistently said throughout the novel that he is a failure and he cannot do anything right or catch a break. This is the case whether it comes to his love life, musical instruments, special skills or talents. He claims the greatest parts about him are his parents, his best friends, Franny and Jill, and then his girlfriend, Kate. One could imagine Jack talking about his poor luck towards the beginning of the novel and at the start of each 'redo,' but there are also times where Jack makes his feelings about his friends and family known as well.

Jack is not good at much, so he spends a lot of time with his friends and girl friend outside of school. Franny, Jack and Jill are in a band and look forward to performing at Jacks parents’ anniversary party. Within all of that, Jack can be somewhat frantic when it comes down to deciding his next move even though he is fairly quick on his toes. With each redo comes a different decision to make it successful.

Jack has been told numerous times that his best friend Franny is jealous of him. Franny is jealous of Jack because of his seemingly ‘perfect’ family. Franny is going through a lot with his father just being released from prison and he constantly tells Jack that Jack is all Franny has; Jack is someone Franny can count on all day. Jack’s girlfriend, Kate, always tells him how happy he makes her. His parents are very proud of Jack and make sure he knows that. When Jack is balancing everything, all of his friends make it known that he is a great guy, but if he’s struggling, they tell him that he needs to get his act together.

I highly recommend this novel to anyone who may be on the fence with the stereotypical dystopian novel.
