I was born before using ultrasounds to determine the gender of your baby, so my parents had no idea if they would have a boy or girl. The two of them were absolutely certain they were going to have a boy and therefore only had a boy name prepared. They were going to name me Beau, my father wanted the name Beasupheus. My mother hated it and only liked the sound of Beau. But they had a girl and I went without a name for a week. The only other name they had was Cory, but felt it was too masculine and changed the spelling to have a K.

As a toddler they got into the habit of calling me by my first and middle name Kory Anne. (Anne is after my abuela). And when I was tiny I thought my name was Kory Anne.

Fun fact! Kory is Latin for spear and my father’s name Gerard means spear wielder.

My mom got my name from her best friend in grade 2. My grandfather was in the Air Force, so as a child my mom moved to a new city/country every year or two years and she found it difficult to make friends sometimes, because she constantly was moving. Holly, her grade 2 best friend, was very friendly and kind to her and that just always stuck with my mom and she decided to name me after her.

When I was born, my parents were choosing between two names, Carter and Ethan. Ironically, they went with Ethan, and not Carter, (popular at the time because of Joe Carters home run in the 1993 World Series). Ethan they just liked. My middle name, Thomas, for the majority of my life I thought was after my uncle. However, this year on my birthday, I found out it was after the doctor who delivered me.

Well this is a long story...My mother was admitted into the hospital when she was five months pregnant with me, she has an autoimmune disease called Lupus and it became really difficult for her to get pregnant. When she did get pregnant unfortunatley she had several miscarriages. Finally, she became pregnant with me and her Doctors recommended to terminate her pregnancy because of her kidney function was at 30% and she had to start dialysis. Her doctors asked her many times to terminate her pregnancy but she really believed that I would be strong enough to make it through… I was born premature because one Doctor told her that I would have a better chance if I came out early for some reason. Anyways, when I was born, apparently I stopped breathing for two minutes and then she started praying for me to breathe. She said right at that moment she changed my name to "Angel" because I was her "miracle baby" she was "not supposed to have". After my birth, it took a huge toll on her body, her kidney function was at 10%. She had to do an emergency operation to save her life so my grandmother donated her kidney to save her life.

While my first name doesn't have any particularly sentimental meaning (99.999% of babies born in the early 90's were named Caitlin/Kaitlyn, etc.), my middle name (Christine) does. It's a bit of a dark story, so buckle up....Back in the 1940s, my grandmother had a stillborn daughter who was born on Christmas Day. They named her Christine after the date of her birth/death. My Grammie went on to have four boys, and always lamented not having had the chance to raise a daughter. In honour of my grandmother's loss, and her lifelong wish to raise a little girl, my father named me after her stillborn daughter. While it's a rather grim way to be named, I love the idea that (in some small way) I've helped my wonderful grandmother heal.

The pic I've included is of my Grammie (who was a teacher) showing me painted turtles at Wye Marsh. Note my very stylish Hercules hat.
