The name "4 Your Eyez Only" and the lyrics in the song refer to the reason this song was curated and for who it was meant for. This album and song was from the point of view of J. Coles's best friend he had while growing up. Showing his perspective and the reasoning for the life he chose and how he didn't have much choice but to take the path he was only left with. J. Cole also shows the perspective of how much his friend loved and cared for his daughter and throughout the song when his friend could sense his time was coming to an end he knew he wanted to leave something behind for his daughter. To help her better understand the reasoning and the passing of her father.

The U.S. has the most amount of imprisoned people in the world. In 2013 7 million people were in some form of stage in the Criminal Justice system. In these lyrics J. Cole depicts his best friend doing anything he can to earn legal ways of making money but because of his stained employment it's making it hard to get better jobs. This shows that he did indeed try to make legal ways of money but because of his past, he couldn't get anything worthwhile which ultimately led him into a cycle.
