A few blocks northwest of the University of Tulsa is Kendall Whittier Square, home to some of my favorite places in Tulsa! The family-owned Pancho Anaya bakery that's been mentioned before has a location here; you can come away with enough pastries to feed an army for just a few dollars, and they're all delicious! On the corner is Fairfellow Coffee, one of my personal favorite shops in the city - they have great coffee, a beautiful setup, and plenty of innovative drinks. Down the block is Whitty Books, a locally-owned bookstore, as well as the Stem Cell Shop, a kitschy science nerd dream come true. It also features the lab of Tyler Thrasher, who does super cool art using bugs and crystallization. Across the block is Calavera's, which has delicious food (my personal favorite is the chile relleno burrito), and a little farther south is Circle Cinema, where you can find independent films and plenty of cool screenings. This place is definitely worth checking out!

The massacre aimed to destroy the Greenwood area, then known as "Black Wall Street" - a prosperous and self-sufficient black community.

After the end of the Civil War in 1865, many newly freed slaves in the South began to migrate away from the lands of their bondage and to what they hoped was greener pastures. While many moved to the North, often with assistance from the Freedman's Bureau, a large group also went west, to the American "new frontier." Taking their name from the Biblical story of Moses leading the Israelites from Egypt, the Exodusters went west, setting the foundation for a number of black independent communities throughout northeastern Oklahoma, and eventually blossoming into the Black Wall Street you can read about elsewhere on this page.
