What do YOUR standardized test scores say about you? What does your standardized test score NOT say about you? Which factors, other than your “aptitude.” affect your potential and school performance?

I got a 30 on my ACT. I feel like that says that I am good at specifically what the ACT was testing for. Besides that, my score doesn’t really say much about me academically. School performance is based on other factors that standardized testing doesn’t measure.

I think that your test scores show you how you may excel in a certain subject such as math, reading, science and english, however they don’t show overarching factors like anxiety and stress that can impact the score that you get. I believe your ability to communicate and creativity impact your potential and school performance more than your standardized test scores. These skills I believe can drive you further in life, because ultimately, your test scores will be forgotten when you’re older.

Some factors that also affect potential are your work ethic, use of resources, and environment.

Personally, all that my standardized tests tell me is that I am a bad test taker. I do not think my standardized test results reflect my knowledge nor my overall understanding of anything in school. My scores do not portray my personality, what I like to do, what I love, and who I am. I think things such as environment and preparation affect your potential of good scores, not how smart or kind you are which is not okay.

I got a pretty high score on my ACT and a relatively high one on my SAT. I think they show that I’m proficient at basic and advanced mathematics and reading/language comprehension. I don’t really thinks it shows how well I will do in college, since a factor that determines one’s success on college is work ethic, which is not measured by the ACT or SAT. Other factors like how I manage stress or how well organized I am, or how good I am with time management also effect my school performance, none of which are measured on standardized tests.

However, they don’t show any of my creativity, passion, or ability to work with others. School performance does rely a lot on test-taking abilities because of how grades are set up, however, especially in college and beyond, those skills are not as important as social, emotional, and creative skills. Success should not only be defined by grades and test scores, but also by interpersonal connection, passion, and creativity.

But my standardized test does not show that I have a much better grade in my science class or my critical thinking skills. Other factors that affect your potential and school performance are motivation as well as your environment. If you don’t have motivation it is not likely you will succeed in college. Your grades are also a way to tell how successful you might be in college because there might be a pattern.

I think the ACT is important but shouldn’t just be used solely to determine how a student will perform in college. Their GPA which comes straight from the students grades, essays and teacher recs are just as important too because they directly show how the student has been performing in school. I don’t think it’s fair to use this kind of testing to make come to a conclusion about all students performance for college, in some areas it’s most definitely a good representation of the student and how they’ll likely perform but for others that may not be the case because of the kind of testing. It doesn’t say a lot about them academically and what kind of a student they are personally.

I believe my standardized test scores reflect my intelligence and readiness for college to an extent. I personally did not hire a tutor, or frankly, even study for the ACT. However I still finished with a good enough score of 28. I think that the ACT can reflect how good someome is at test taking under high pressure situation, and how much prior knowledge someome may have on the topics, but I don’t believe it says much after that. It doesn’t say much about how creative or a person is or their ability to interact with others, which is huge for real world jobs. I also don’t think it can predict very accurate how well someone will do in college. Factors other than your aptitude that will affect your potential is obviously how much of a hard worker you are, your creativeness, or your social awareness.

I don't know what I got on the ACT, but no matter what I got on it, the ACT doesn't define who I am as a person and how intelligent I am in other criteria and not just academically. The ACT shows us only how intelligent we are a academically, and NOT how intelligent we are with other criteria. It is like the video that we watched in class last class, one can have an extremely smart brain while still being last place or anywhere OTHER than first place. It doesn't tell us how well we are with relationships, even sports or instruments of any kind. Literally any art or fine art of any kind--where is the check on that kind of intelligence? No, schools just have to focus on the academics rather than of who we are and our potential. Regardless of what any of us got an the ACT, we are intelligent in so many other, more important, things.
